JESUS AND THE DISINHERITED
Jesus' ministry was to an oppressed people. In Jesus and the Disinherited, Howard Thurman interprets Jesus' message for the oppressed of today--blacks, Jews, and other minorities. He exposes the isolation and destructive forces of fear, deception, and hatred and suggests the love ethic of Jesus as a difficult, but healing way to overcome the chaos of oppression. Bi 14 1976

THE WORKS OF GEORGE FOX
Volumes 1-8, 1831 edition
Perhaps more than any other early Quaker, Fox `saw to the end of all things.' He saw the deep contradictions in the society of his day and recognized their `beginning and ending in time.' He addressed these contradictions so fundamentally that his prophetic language shook the very foundations of society--the ancient foundations of patriarchy, militarism, class division, and politically-enforced religion. His understanding of the Fall in universal human consciousness, combined with his indictment of the Church's Fall in Western civilization, presage the insights of modern psychology and sociology into human and social alienation. Indeed, in the long run, Fox's critiques outdistance modern theory in that they are not hobbled by the humanistic assumptions that have come to constrict modern disciplines so severely in this century. --Douglas Gwyn
