Longer works of fiction will not be judged. (For K-1 Dictated Short Fiction the maximum length is 1,000 words or 4 typed pages).
1. In the poetry category, students must submit a minimum of three but no more than four poems that represent their best work.
1. Illustration must be original. Computer generated illustration (clip art) is acceptable, but students may not use illustrations downloaded from the Internet without giving credit to the artist. Illustrations will not be judged.

1. A completed copy of the bookplate must be printed or typed and securely attached to the inside front cover of each book.
1. The title and author’s name must be on the cover of the book.
1. The student may print or use cursive writing as long as the result is neat and legible. If the entry is typed or computer-generated, it must be done by the student.
1. Children (K-1) not able to write, as well as special needs students, may dictate their stories and poetry. Please indicate if this was done.
2. In cases where the K-1 student uses invented spelling, the teacher is requested to pencil in the correct spelling below the word so the judges can read the book.

This student’s contest entry was the result of a classroom writing assignment. I reviewed the first draft before sending it home with the student. I then periodically reviewed the progress of the student’s writing. In my opinion the final draft appears to be the student’s own work.
