Summer Reading for Grades 3-6 June 2019
Purpose
The incoming 3rd - 6th Grade will read the book listed below and return the attached form the first day of school.
Requirement I for 3rd-6th grade
The student must read the book listed by incoming grade level and follow the specific directions.
3rd Grade:
The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Clearly
- A comprehension activity, led by the 3rd grade teachers, will take place the first week of school.
4th Grade:
Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume
- A comprehension activity, led by the 4th grade teachers, will take place the first week of school.
5th Grade:
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
- A comprehension activity, led by the 5th grade teachers, will take place the first week of school.
6th Grade:
The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis
- Students should be prepared for a test over the book during the first week of school.
- It is suggested, but not required, that students take notes over important events in the book. Especially, if they read the book early in the summer.

Requirement II for 5th – 6th grade (not 3rd or 4th grade)
In addition to the book above, the students must also read at least the set number of pages listed below. This can include other novels, magazine articles, newspapers, short stories, etc.
5th Grade: 200 pages
6th Grade: 300 pages
The form below should be filled out and returned on the first day of school. Write the title of the book, the author, and the number of pages that you read. Evaluate the difficulty for you on a 1 to 10 scale. (1=much too easy, 10=quite difficult) Have your parent or guardian verify your reading list. Two samples have been provided. If you lose the form or run out of room, make your own replacement.
