Short Story Assignment

Select a story from the list at the bottom of the sheet. You will complete the rest of this assignment based on the story you’ve chosen.

Complete the SHORT STORY WORKSHEET for the story you’ve chosen.

Create a HAND-DRAWN, 8½”x11” TITLE PAGE for the re-release of the story under a NEW TITLE. The title page must also include the author’s name. The title you choose for the story must be appropriate and reflect the story’s THEME or MAIN IDEA.

Create a PLOT GRAPH for your story. Use details from the story with specific references to the important events. Be sure to identify the main parts of plot development (e.g. introduction, inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution).

Locate THREE (3) quotations/sentences in the story that each serve one (1) of the following purposes [you must find ONE (1) quotation for each]:

a) helps tell the reader about a character in the story

b) helps create a picture of the story’s setting

c) helps present the story’s theme/lesson

For each one, you must (i) record the quotation along with the answers to your other questions, and (ii) explain how it helps accomplish the purpose for which it’s been chosen.

Locate TWO (2) DIFFERENT examples of LITERARY DEVICES in the story and answer the following questions for each:

a) What is the quotation/sentence from the story in which you’ve found a literary device being used?

b) What type of literary device is being used in this quotation/sentence?
