What employees need to know about Tuition Remission
What Employees Should Know about Tuition Remission
Which classes can I take?
You can take any classes that are state supported. Most evening and weekend courses are NOT state supported, as they are run through the Continuing Education department. Classes may be in the Continuing Education Department one semester and not the next—based on a financial allocation decision, not on the type of class.
There is no limit to how many classes you can apply for.
But remember you will need to pay for fees, so check out the cost of fees before signing up for more than you can afford at once.
You will need to pay fees for your class
The Tuition Remission offers free tuition to eligible employees at participating state colleges, universities and community colleges. However program participants will still need to pay fees and the cost of books. We strongly encourage employees to check the cost of fees before applying for Tuition Remission. At many schools tuition is $25 or $25 per credit, while fees may be $100 or more per credit.
When should I fill out the certificate application form?
The certificate application form should be completed at least 30 days prior to the start of the class. This should allow enough time for processing and mail before the school demands payment for tuition and fees. However, we cannot accept certificate too far in advance. We accept certificates on the following schedule:
Fall June* -First week of October
Winter/Spring December-First week of February
Summer Session I (June classes) April-June
Summer Session II (July/August classes) June* -August
*Certificate can be processed after an organization has renewed for the following academic year

Online Classes
The agreement between the Providers’ Council and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education to operate the Tuition Remission Program for human service providers does not specifically address online classes. It is up to each school to approve an application for tuition remission for an online class, and will likely depend on the funding for that particular class. We have received reports back from participants that schools did accept tuition remission for online classes. We do not expect that all schools will accept tuition remission for all online classes. We recommend interested employees call the school registrar to check if they will accept tuition remission for the particular online class.
