“HAD BETTER”
En términos generales, se usa "had better" para dar un consejo, y aunque "had" es el pasado de "have", se usa "had better" para dar un consejo en el presente y en el futuro.
La Forma negativa es : "had better not"
USAMOS "HAD BETTER" PARA DAR CONSEJOS DE SITUACIONES "ESPECIFICAS". PARA SITUACIONES "GENERALES", SE DEBE USAR "SHOULD".
Generalmente, cuando usamos "had better" para dar un consejo, también se hace una sugerencia que si no se sigue o lleva a cabo,
PASARÁ ALGO MALO
También se abrevia "'d better", junto al sujeto: You'd better hurry up or you will be late!
Ejemplos:
You had better do what I say or else you will get into trouble.
Te aconsejo que hagas lo que digo, o te meterás en problemas.
I had better get back to work or my boss will be angry with me.
Yo debo regresar a trabajar o mi jefe se enojará conmigo.
We had better get to the airport by five or we may miss the flight.
Deberíamos llegar al aeropuerto antes de las 5, o podríamos perder el vuelo.
“SHOULD”
· A la hora de ofrecer un consejo personal o señalar que una opción es la mejor a elegir se usa should. Va siempre seguido de un verbo en infinitivo, sin la partícula to:
We should visit her – Deberiamos visitarla.
You should not wear only a T-shirt. It is cold-No deberías llevar sólo camiseta. Hace frío.
"Should" indica también una obligación o recomendación. Refleja una opinión sobre lo que es correcto. Se traduce como el subjuntivo de "deber" en español.
Ejemplos:
I should call my parents more often. (Debería llamar a mis padres más a menudo.)
You shouldn't work so hard. (No debería trabajar tan duro.)
They should practice more if they want to win the championship. (Deberían practicar más si quieren ganar el campeonato.)
Se utiliza "should" en frases interrogativas para preguntar si existe una obligación o para pedir una recomendación.
Ejemplos:
Should we leave a tip? (¿Deberíamos dejar una propina?)
Should I have the steak or the chicken? (¿Debería comer el bistec o el pollo?)
Where should they meet you? (¿Dónde deberían encontrarte?)
