Casino – A Jackie Hundley Experience

Casino – A Jackie Hundley Experience

By Lacey Strange Montgomery

I chose to teach a classmate, Jackie Hundley, how to play Casino. Casino is a fun game that my husband taught me. He plays this game with his dad when ever they get together. So for me, Casino is a great game to play with friends or family. It is a great way to spend time together.

I am sure that there is a computer version of this game, however I do not have it so I used playing cards to teach Jackie the game Casino. I assumed the computer version would look similar to other computer versions of card games, such as Free Cell or Solitaire. The graphics for these games are clean and all that is needed for these games. The graphics also make the game very intuitive. The computer game might be also like the computerized versions of Poker games. Free Cell and Solitaire are both single player games while Poker and Casino are multi-player games. The computerized version would also allow the player to play against the computer which would be very helpful for people that wish to play but do not have anybody to play, such as people wishing to play at 3:00 in the morning.

Casino is considered a fishing game. A fishing game is a game in which each player has a hand of cards and there is a layout of cards face up on the table. If player takes turn and plays a card. If the card matches a card or card in the layout then the played card and the matched card(s) are acquired by the current player and placed face down in front of the player. If the card does not match a card in the layout then it is added to the layout (). Casino is the only fishing game to have become popular in English speaking countries ().

Casino is a mental fun game. Players may also consider it a strategy game. The player uses strategy to beat his or her opponent. The player also uses strategy to decide how he or she wishes to use his or her cards. The player might think, “Should I use the 2 to make a 10 or to pick up the current 10 that is on the board?”. The player might also think about what cards have already been played and what cards that the other player probably has. There is also some chance in what cards you are dealt and this can also determine the outcome of the game.

I cannot think of what other games that Casino is like. As mentioned earlier, Casino is the only fishing game that is popular in English speaking countries.

Casino is a card game played with an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards. Casino can be played with 2 – 4 players. Theoretically Casino could be played with more people but is generally only played with 2 – 4 people.

Each player is given 4 cards and there are 4 cards laying face up in the middle of the table. One way for the player to acquire a card that is in the center is to have a card that matches that in his or her hand. The player then places both of these cards face down in front of him or her. A player may also “pick up” or acquire cards that add up to a card in his or her hand. Such as a player with a 10 in his or her hand can pick up the 6 and the 4 that are in the center of the table. A player can also use any combination of these two methods such as a 10 in the players hand can pick up the 10 and the two 5’s that that are in the center of the table. This does not, however, work with face cards. A face card will only pick up one other face card that matches it. If a player can not “play” his or her card (acquire any of the cards in the center), then the player must add his or her card face up to the collection of cards in the center of the table. After each player takes turn playing their four cards, four more cards are dealt to each player.

At the end of the game, when the whole deck of cards has been used, points are counted. There are a total of 11 point possible. The person with the most cards is awarded 3 points. The person with the most spades gets 1 point. Certain cards are worth more points. The 10 of diamonds is worth 2 points. The 2 of spades is worth 1 point. Each ace is worth 1 point apiece. The cards are then shuffled and played again until a player reaches 21 points.

For new players the points are a little more difficult to remember. When I first learned to play, I kept trying to count all of the face cards and expected these cards to be worth points. Still today, I get confused about which of the 10 of diamonds, 10 of spades, 2 of diamonds, or 2 of spades is worth points. These cards seem kind of arbitrary to me. What is special about the 10 of diamonds? Why should it be worth 2 points and most everything else is worth 1 point.

|Point Distribution in Casino |

|Most Cards |3 Points |

|Most Spades |1 Point |

|10 of Diamonds |2 Points |

|(Big Casino/ Good Ten) | |

|2 of Spades |1 Point |

|(Little Casino/ Good Two) | |

|Ace of Diamonds |1 Point |

|Ace of Hearts |1 Point |

|Ace of Spades |1 Point |

|Ace of Clovers |1 Point |

|Total |11 Points |

Jackie enjoyed the game. The game was easy for her to learn. Within 3 hands, she was beating me. The game did not require too much focus or thought so it was relaxing and fun to play.

The game was pretty easy to teach. I find it easier to show someone how to play by letting him or her play and be immersed in the game. Then I am able to tell them or show them by example how to play the game. I usually let the first few hands be practice hands where the other player can ask any questions and points do not matter.

Another great thing about this game is that it is easy to learn strategy by playing the game a few times. The more you play the game, the better you will become at knowing when to play what card and judging how your opponent will play.

I think that the game is competitive for the people that want it to be and simply a way to pass time to people that enjoy that. I generally do not rigorously keep score the way that many people do. Jackie and I decided to play the game for its funativity value instead of competing.

Jackie enjoyed learning how to play this game. This assignment taught me more about the learnability of a game. It also taught me to focus and to watch how someone else was enjoying the game. It also forced me to think of regular games and their computerized counterparts. Knowing the different types of games and why people play games will also help in designing our own games. This assignment also taught me about how play testing is important when designing a game. Not everybody likes the same things that I do, so I have to keep this in mind if I am designing something for someone else.
