Year 7 Summer 1 Lesson 4: Horizontal and Vertical linesObjectiveTo find equations of vertical and horizontal linesAimThis lesson shows students that patterns in coordinates can be expressed using an equation using x’s or y’s. This lesson is only horizontal and vertical lines, not diagonal. The questions towards the end link to area and perimeter of rectangles so provide a recap of that.Resources HYPERLINK "" \o "Vertical and horizontal lines" PowerpointStraight line three in a row?game in plastic wallets. One per pair.2 dice per pair1 quadrant grids in plastic walletsVertical and horizontal lines worksheetKey words: x-coordinate, y-coordinate, horizontal, vertical.Settler: Numeracy Ninjas (max 10 mins)Activity 1: ?Give out?Three in a row grid and two dice per pair. The instructions for the game are on the Powerpoint.? It is quite common for students to make mistakes when plotting coordinates, so the first two slides are just used as a reminder.? It is important that the first dice is the x and the second dice thrown in the y coordinate.Students keep playing until one of them has three in a row, either vertically or horizontally, not diagonally (Any three in a row - they don't have to be next to each other). They must make a note of the coordinates that make that line.? Please make sure they do this, as it is needed for the next part of the lesson. Keep playing, and finding more lines until the time is up.Questions for progressionWhat do you notice about the three coordinates that make your line?Activity 2: Bring class together to look at results.? Ask one pair for three coordinates for a vertical line.? Write them on the slide. What do they notice? Can they explain what is happening in words? Show that their worded explanation can be written as an equation.? Emphasise the word 'equation'. Repeat for the horizontal lines.Students then copy and complete the slides from slides 8-11 into their books.Questions for progressionWhat do you notice about the coordinates that make the vertical lines? What do you notice about the coordinates that make the horizontal lines?Activity 3: ?Students answer the next questions from slides 12-28 on their plastic wallets, either on the blank side or on the grid side.It is intentionally repetitive to emphasise the link between the equations and coordinates (something that is lost higher up the school if not understood properly lower down the school).Questions for progressionShow me an example of..And anotherAnd anotherShow me an example of one that isn’t…Activity 4: ?Give out a?Horizontal and Vertical lines worksheet?to each student. They should compare answers to their partners and check the work as they go along.? When they are happy it is all correct, they should swap with another pair to try to find errors.Display the worksheet on the whiteboard. Ask students for their answers work and check if they are correct.Questions for progressionWhat are the dimensions of the enclosed rectangle? So how can you find the area? Perimeter?Acknowledgements:M Warden ................
