COAT HANGER MATH
Materials needed: wire hanger, clothespins
Take the hanger and hang about 20 plastic clothespins across the bottom. (colors are fun to use)
Preschool/kindergarten Parent: “Show me three.”
“Show me five.” Let your child count the clothespins and scoot them across the hanger.
K-2 Parent: “Show me three. Add four.” “What did you get?” (It is normal to re-count.)
Multiplication
Parent: “Show me 4 sets of 3.”
“How can you say that using multiplication?”
“I will write a multiplication sentence. (5 x 3)
Show me with the clothespins what that means.”
Division
Parent: “Show me 15 divided by 3 = 5.”
“Now I will arrange the clothespins.” (8 clothespins divided into four groups with 2 in each group)
“How can you say that using division?”
Child: “Eight divided by four equals two.”
