Patient information for Nexplanon Contraceptive Implants

This information sheet has been produced by the practice to enable you to make an informed choice as to it’s suitability for a contraceptive method for you. It is designed to be read in conjunction with 2 other information leaflets.

• Nexplanon and you - Organon (the implant manufacturers)

• Subdermal implants – Family planning association

Nexplanon is a single rod implant, about the size of a matchstick.

It is inserted in the inner area of your non-dominant arm about 6cm above the elbow.

It slowly releases a hormone (progesterone) which works by preventing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus secretions

Advantages

• It is a highly effective contraceptive method.

• It lasts for 3 yrs.

• Immediately effective if fitted within 1st 5 days of a period.

• A good ‘fit and forget’ method. Once fitted the user can rely on it without need for any other actions (Eg pill taking, injections etc).

• Its effect is immediately reversed on removal so fertility returns as soon as it is removed.

• It may improve painful periods and may reduce premenstrual syndrome.

• Good choice for patients with previous history of ectopic pregnancy.

Disadvantages

• Unpredictable bleeding pattern- this can take many forms ranging from irregular periods or spotting, prolonged bleeding or complete cessation of bleeding.

• Side effects are possible including headaches, acne, mood & weight changes, breast tenderness- usually these settle and don’t need treatment.

• Insertion/Removal problems E.g. bruising, infection, scarring.

• Reduced reliability in final year in very overweight women-earlier replacement may be advised.

• Does not protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Please ask if you are worried. We are always happy to discuss and advise you about any areas of concern regarding sexual health issues including screening for infections.
