The MRC/UCT Medical Imaging Research Unit has a vacancy for a PhD graduate in physics or engineering with expertise in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The person will be an employee of the University of Cape Town, but will be physically located at the Cape Universities Brain Imaging Centre (CUBIC) on the campus of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Stellenbosch at Tygerberg in Cape Town. This research environment is unique to South Africa and offers the opportunity to work with a vibrant team on a research-dedicated 3 Tesla MRI scanner.

The position involves managing the day-to-day operation of the facility, as well as working as an integrated member of multiple neuroscience research teams from collaborating universities in the Cape Town region. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop an independent research career in collaboration with local partner institutions. Applicants should be experienced in using contemporary MR imaging techniques, and be in a position to optimise and develop new acquisition sequences in collaboration with industry partners. CUBIC aims to attract prospective students for further training and the successful applicant will be expected to teach and supervise post-graduate students.

The appointee will report to the Director of the MRC/UCT Medical Imaging Research Unit and to the CUBIC Management Board.

This position is ideally suited to a confident individual with an interest in neuroscience and MR physics research, who has excellent communication skills, and who has demonstrated an ability to work successfully within clinical research teams.

Requirements:

• A Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics or a related field

• Recent experience in a range of Magnetic Resonance Imaging applications

• Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary field

• Strong interpersonal skills

The following would be advantageous:

• A background in Biomedical Engineering

• An interest in neuroscience research

• Experience in image post-processing and analysis

• MRI pulse sequence programming expertise

• Demonstrated experience in project design and management

• Familiarity with the Siemens MRI systems

Responsibilities include:

• Working alongside neuroscience researchers to optimise imaging protocols.

• Establishing research collaboration with industry partners to develop and extend acquisition protocols in areas relevant to South African neuroscience needs.

• Day-to-day management of the Brain Imaging Centre in collaboration with senior university staff.

• Strategic planning for the growth and sustainability of the facility.

• Oversight of radiographers, administrative staff, research assistants and students operating in the environment.

• Contributing to the design and writing of research grants.

• Reporting to the management team and scientific committee.

• Supervising and co-supervising Masters and Ph.D. students from a variety of disciplines.

• Giving lectures on medical imaging and biomedical engineering to scientists, engineers and clinicians.

• Marketing and promoting the Brain Imaging Centre.

• Establishing and managing electronic archiving and storage facilities.

• Accepting overall responsibility for implementation and enforcing of safety measures in relation to high field MR.

The position is being offered as a full-time academic appointment for a contract period of three years. Contract extension and/or a permanent appointment thereafter will be considered in the light of a formal performance evaluation and the continued funding of the MRC/UCT Medical Imaging Research Unit. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience at the level of Lecturer.

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is negotiable between R319 362 and R365 480.
