Sig Fig Rules:

1. Every nonzero digit is significant.

2. Zeros sandwiched in between significant figures are significant.

3. In order to be significant, zeros must follow a decimal AND a number.

Using sig figs in calculations:

1. When multiplying and dividing, the number in the problem with the least sig figs determines the number of sig figs on your answer.

2. When adding and subtracting, the least number of decimal places of the numbers in the problem determines the number of sig figs.

3. Exact values or “standards” do not limit sig figs ONLY measured data determine sig figs.

4. Remember the calculator is STUPID…You are NOT!
