Rules for Significant Figures

(a.k.a. Sig Figs!)

1. Every non-zero digit IS significant.

2. Zeros between significant digits ARE significant.

3. Zeros at the beginning of (to the left of) a value are NOT significant, they are just place holders.

4. Zeros at the end of a number and after (to the right of) a decimal point ARE significant (they show a higher level of precision).

5. Zeros at the end of a number that does not show a decimal point are CONFUSING ! Were they measured or are they just place holders? To avoid confusion use scientific notation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiplication/Division: The answer should contain the same number of sig figs as the measurement with the FEWEST number of sig figs.

Addition/Subtraction: (a bit tricky) The final digit should be in the same place (hundreds, tens, ones, tenths, hundredths, etc.) as the measurement with its final digit in the LEAST PRECISE (leftmost) place.
