Notebook and Supplies - PC\|MAC

Notebook and Supplies

• You will be required to keep a notebook. At a minimum, you will need a 1½-inch, 3-ring binder with dividers with your own notebook paper.

Divider 1: Warm-Ups -- These may be review, EOCT problems, or a preview of what is ahead.

Divider 2: NOTES—You are expected to take notes in class and keep them for reference.

Divider 3: All assignments should be kept in this section in the order in which they are assigned. Always keep your name, date, the assignment pages, and the assignment number in the top right hand corner of each assignment. I have assignment charts available.

Divider 4: Quizzes

• Pencils for all work. Pens and highlighters will be used for grading purposes.

• A scientific calculator is a must. I suggest a TI-30XS Multiview or Casio fx-115ES or fx-115ES Plus. The bonus of getting one of these is that it will make the statistics a lot easier and it is permitted on the EOC.

• Geometry – You will need a compass, protractor, and straight edge at times at home. I have supplies in class, but you may wish to have your own.

• GRAPH PAPER – blue ¼ in. grid – You can buy a pack and split with a friend.

• My wish list if you would like to donate – tissue, hand sanitizer

Performance Tasks

• Performance tasks will be done alone, in pairs, or in groups throughout the units. These tasks are used as a tool to help you acquire the math content. Sometimes you will be asked to present your work during class and sometimes the tasks and presentations will be graded.

Homework/Classwork

• Homework/Classwork is a tool to help you acquire the math content, to help you develop your math skills, and to help you develop confidence in problem solving. If you do not complete the assigned work, do not expect to do well in this class. Sometimes work will be graded through frequent homework quizzes that will cover the material you were expected to practice on the assignment. Homework/Classwork will also be graded at times for accuracy and completion.

• It is POLICY at Pierce County High School to refrain from allowing students to just settle for a zero. That means students MUST complete the work assigned in any course. I accept late work on 2 late assignments. A late assignment must be turned in the next day or the grade becomes a 0 in the grade book.

Extra Credit

• Strictly speaking, there is no extra credit in this class. At my discretion, a few assignments and tests may have a few bonus points available. Do not expect to work for extra credit at the end of the grading period to alter your grade.

• I am using a “geobuck” system this year to earn a little “cushion” for those of you who want to be OUTSTANDING!!

How to earn them:

1. 90 or above on a quiz (1 geobuck)

2. 80 or above on a test (1 geobuck), 90 or above on a test (2 geobucks)

3. Volunteering for boardwork and explanations

4. Bonus work or friendly competitions

5. No absences or tardies during the week

6. OR just being an all-around outstanding student during class sometimes!!

How to use them:

1. 6 will drop a daily grade (up to 2 grades)

2. 8 will drop a quiz grade (only 1 allowed)

3. 10 will add 5 points to a test grade (up to 10 points)

Attendance and Makeup Work

• Attendance is an extremely important part of this class. Your success depends on your being in class every day. If you are absent or out of class for a school function, it is your responsibility to get the notes and assignments that are missed. You will have 3 days to make up missed work. Missed tests and quizzes can be made up before or after school by making prior arrangements with me.

Extra Help

• I am always more than happy to help you with any difficulties you may be having in class. Normally, it is best to catch me before school in the morning (7:50-8:10) or in the afternoon right after school (3:30-3:50). Just please check with me and let me know. You should always feel free to stop by and ask a question or email me. I will stay longer in the afternoons if needed…just be sure to make prior arrangements.

ISS and Absences

• It is your responsibility to get any notes/warm-ups when you are absent from class (excused or unexcused). ISS is not an excuse for you to not complete assignments, tests or quizzes. You are not to interrupt my class if you do not understand an assignment in ISS. ISS is a punishment that is the consequence of the choices you have made. It is not an excuse to fall behind in class. If you need assistance, I am here before and after school. You must make the effort to come see me for help.

Class Rules and Expectations

• Be prepared.

• Be involved.

• Be courteous.

Be prepared means you will bring your materials to class everyday (paper, pencil, notebook, textbook, calculator, etc.), you will bring your homework to class, and you will study for quizzes and tests.

Be involved means you will participate in class, attempt to do any class work, ask questions when confused, and try to help your classmates with the material when appropriate.

Be courteous means you will treat your teacher and classmates like you want to be treated. Don’t talk when it is not appropriate. Don’t sleep. Don’t get out of your desk when it is not appropriate. Don’t work on other class work. Don’t access your cell phone. Don’t play games on your calculator.

Consequences for failing to follow any of the above rules will result in a phone call or email to your parents, detention with the teacher, and ultimately a referral to an administrator.

A Few Friendly Reminders…

1. FOLLOW THE CELL PHONE POLICY. While there may be times where we use our own technology, cell phones are not permitted in class during most instruction. I will take the phone if I see you with it out, or using it in your bag or purse. No one looks down and “glows” without something being in their hand!!

2. Eat and drink only in the lunchroom!! ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN MY CLASSROOM…I WILL TAKE YOUR SNACK OR DRINK WITH NO HESITATION!!

3. ALWAYS DO YOUR VERY BEST!!
