How to take my summer distance learning classes
HOW TO TAKE MY SUMMER DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES
Dr. Zhou
Email: zhou@naigara.edu
Session I:
HRT275 ONLA1: Chinese Cuisine and Culture
TRM490 ONLA1 Tourism Economics
Session II:
TRM485 ONLB2: Internet Marketing
HRT496 ONLB2: Senior Seminar/Practicum
Please follow the steps below to sign up for the class:
Step 1: Go to your adviser and sign up for my summer classes. Disregard the time schedule and classroom location listed in the catalogue since it is an online distance learning class. New time schedule will be sent to you via email.
Step 2: Email me at zhou@niagara.edu and tell me which summer class(es) you have registered, so I can send you information regarding your registered course(s). Please check your email frequently for update information.
Step 3: One week before you leave for home for summer vacation, pick up your textbooks from the campus store or course materials from me if you are told to do so.
You should have the course materials from me if you are taking:
HRT275 ONLA1: CHINESE CUISINE AND CULTURE
You should have the textbook from the campus store if you are taking:
TRM 485 ONLB2: INTERNET MARKETING
TRM 490 ONLA1: Tourism Economics
Note: you do not need a textbook for HRT 496 ONLB2.
Step 5: Go to for a preview of syllabus and other related information. Contents are subject to change from year to year, so watch out for updating information from emails.
Step 6: After you register, you should be able to access our school’s distance learning website at (typically it won’t be accessible until the official spring school comes to a close when IT starts to upload your registration file into Blackboard), where you can ‘login’ using your student number as your ID (user name) and your birthday plus your last four digits of your SSN/SIN. You will be able to change your password later once you are loginned. Students without a SSN/SIN can contact the Information Technology Dept. to setup your account. Student support is available either via web at niagara.edu/it or by phone at 286-7300. Special Note: is where we will go to use the virtual classroom to meet on scheduled times, while is where you will find most of the information on the courses you are taking. You don’t need an ID and password to go to .
Step 7: Read step 6 one more time!!! And then log on to to test drive the site. Be sure to go to your enrolled course to navigate and familiarize yourself with the site. Report any problem back to me ASAP by email. Special note: the blackboard uses an online roster that uses ONLY your student number as your email address. If you have used a third party email other than your student email, MAKE sure you contact the student support to verify your default student email registered at school. Anyway, it is ALWAYS safe to check your student email since that is the default for the blackboard email program.
Step 8: You are required to come to the first virtual classroom meeting in which detailed schedule for the summer class will be discussed and set. Watch out for the email in which date and time of the first meeting will be announced. It is your responsibility that you come to this first virtual meeting and all other following schedule meetings since we are not going to have as many classes as in a regular classroom setting. Missing a single virtual class could mean missing a week of class notes. One thing you can be sure, however, is that I will work very hard to schedule these meetings to suit your work schedule in summer, even if it means I have to meet u in the middle of the night.
Step 9: I use Yahoo messenger. My ID is rooozee. If you do not have MSN or Yahoo messenger, please go to to apply for an email account and then download Yahoo messenger to your computer. Set it up and add my ID to your buddy list. This is a backup means to communicate with me during our online class sessions in case the Blackboard malfunctions. I will turn my Yahoo messenger on during our online classes. Note, yahoo and MSN ID work with each other, but if you use Yahoo, you will have a much easier time communicating with me..
