II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Tenth grade health builds upon the awareness established in 7th and 9th grades. Primary focus will be in the area of noninfectious diseases, including those directly related to lifestyle behaviors, and ways to prevent and treat these diseases. In addition, students will be introduced to human sexuality and life cycle topics – from pregnancy to aging and death. Also, a unit in First Aid and CPR will give students skills they may someday need in an emergency situation. It is our intent to equip students with the knowledge and awareness they will need to achieve optimum health and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:

Homework – teacher-made worksheets – given periodically throughout the semester

Tests – 2 – 3 per marking period

Quiz – 2 – 3 per marking period

Readings from Current Health – as appropriate by topic

VII. COURSE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

GRADING SYSTEM

All homework and quiz grades will be added together at the end of a marking period. This will be converted to a percentage grade (number of points earned divided by the number of possible points).

Any assigned papers or group projects will be graded with a rubric.

Extra credit may be given throughout the marking period. Points will be added to the marking period grade.

EXPECTATIONS FOR TESTS AND ASSIGNMENTS:

Students will be expected to turn in assignments on time. They will be accepted late with the teacher option of deducting late points.

Students absent on the day of an announced quiz will be expected to make it up as soon as it is reasonably possible in accordance with the school districts missed work policy.

Students may have the option of taking a retest if they discuss this with the teacher.
