COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide the paramedic student with the skills and knowledge to handle pediatric emergencies in the pre-hospital setting. Pediatric patients are not treated as “young” adults. They are a distinct population with different responses to injuries than adults.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Students Acquire from this Course (Educational Objectives)

At the completion of this program you should be able to:

1. Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life-span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of pediatric patients.

2. Identify impending signs and symptoms of respiratory failure, shock and cardiac arrest in the patient.

3. Demonstrate Basic Life Support, Vascular Access, Arrhythmia Recognition and Management, Cardioversion and Defibrillation, Advanced Airway Skills.

4. Synthesize algorithmic data, using respiratory failure, and shock video scenarios.

5. Assess and evaluate unstable cardiac rhythms, shock, respiratory failure and their treatment in case scenario.

6. Discuss pre-test questions and frequently asked questions.

7. Demonstrate course mastery in role play, testing areas, per AHA guidelines.

8. Record Mastery of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support course through successful completion of written test.
