Ask one student to read aloud the definition (if able to). Discuss what the students think this means. Highlight any multiple meanings. Ask any willing students to try and define the word in their own words. Ask any willing students to put the word in a sentence.Experiencing the word meaningInterpret phone graph. Tell students you are now going to have a go at interpreting some data. Present the work sheet with a graph of the ages that children first get a mobile telephone. Interpret the data: what age were people when they first got a mobile last year? What will happen next? What happened before 2006? Discuss: What age do you think people should have their own phone? Word detective Mind Mapping Create mind map sheets for folderWrite on board/flip chart to lead group discussion - Analyse the sound of the word: word initial sound, syllables, rhymes, other words it reminds us of, create new words by adding suffixes and prefixes (e.g. interpretation, interpreting, interpreted, interpreter).Make links to the meaning of the word: Talk about words which mean the opposite, similar words, when you could use the word, take it in turns to put the word in a sentence.Discuss the word in multiple contexts: foreign language / results / feelings / ic activityWord in focus: Interpreting body language. Students each come to you for an ‘emotion’ card (or whisper an emotion to each student). They then leave the class for a second, come back in with ‘emotive persona’ and others guess what emotion they are portraying with their body language only – ‘interpret body language’.Watch the You Tube clip (if interactive white board or similar is available). Search body language job interview by Satya Singh In pairs, role play the job interview scenario of asking ‘why do you want this job?’ for each students’ dream job (chocolate taster, manager of favourite band, footballer etc). Practice answering the question with the most professional body language. The ‘interviewer’ gives feedback on how they interpreted the candidate’s body language.
