Proposal for Vision Exercises

Proposal for Vision ExercisesFor the St. Louis Psychoanalytic InstituteVisioning is a process of aligning energy in common cause around an inspiring pictureof the future. The Vision describes the world that organizations seek to create through the work of the Mission. It is:a compelling image of the future;an imagination-stretching yet still credible view of what’s possible; anda dream that engages the heart and spirit and inspires people to action. The group meeting(s) would begin with breaking into smaller groups. Each group will discuss and write down (we will need a secretary to take notes) two or three statements that answers the question, “Why does the Institute exist?” or “Why would anyone care about the Institute?”We will reconvene as a larger group. Each smaller group will share their “Why” statements. The larger will pick the one that best describes The Why of the Institute. Below are two different exercises that could then be used to develop a vision for the Institute. We need to choose the one we think will produce the best results for our constituencies.Visioning the Institute in 20 YearsAsk everyone to come to the meeting with a vision of the institute in 20 years. In the year 2040, you are describing the institute to someone who hasn’t heard of it. What will you tell them?Start with the need for Psychoanalysts in the world. Is there still a patient-base for psychoanalysis? Who will the patients be (age, wealth, issues)? Will psychoanalysis still look the same? Then visualize the candidates. Who will they be? Where will they come from? How did they hear about us? Will there be more? Less? About the same? Will they have the same background? Will the faculty have the same make-up? Will it be more exclusive or inclusive? How did we get that way? How much time will they have to give to the Institute? Next think of the funding of Institute. Who will be willing to pay tuition at the current rate (adjusted for inflation)? How will it be paid for? What is the competition? What makes us different? Would we still have donors? Why would someone fund the Institute?Last, but not least, think of the staff. What kind of support is needed to make this vision become reality? What skills will faculty members bring versus what skills will staff members bring? What will be most important skills to make the vision a reality? We will pick two or three people to share their vision. (For example, at the Executive Committee, we could ask one board member, one faculty member, and one staff member.) Then, we can begin a discussion about what do we need to be doing in the next three years, in order to reach that vision of 2040.Visioning Pre-workI recommend we send out “Pre-work”, which would include visiting the Welcome to the Institute page on our website () and re-familiarizing ourselves with the Institute’s history. The Pre-work also includes watching Simon Sinek’s TED Talk, (short version ) Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action. ................
