Invite children to play in the home. Consider setting the area up as a different room in a home or different type of home throughout the unit. Math Center: Number of the week 9: Create a number 9 and collage various art materials on the number 9 then write the word “nine” on the bottom of your work to the best of your ability.Science Center: Rainbow Activity: The children will be provided with cups of food coloring and paper towel. We will watch throughout the week what happens to the paper towel as it is dipped into the various colors of food coloring. The children can draw their findings. Writing Center: Practice writing the first letter in your name. Try using terms such as top to bottom, left to right to guide your child in writing at home. Art Center: Paper bag houseGive each child a brown paper lunch bag. Color, cut out, and glue the shapes for the door and windows. Add a small surprise in the bag. Fold the top of the bag down and add a piece of construction paper, folded, for the roof. You can use jagged scissors to cut the edge of the roof.Block Center: M-T Homes and Buildings: Post pictures of different types of homes and buildings and invite children to build the homes in the pictures or use the pictures as inspiration for creating new homes or buildings.TuesdayDate: 12/1Focus Question: Where do I live? Draw outlines of homes on pieces of paper, supply small people figurines and number cards. Have children pick a card, read the number, and put that many people in the home. Art Center: Create and Paint a House: Materials needed: ?small and jumbo craft sticks (plain wood, not colored), glue, sturdy tag board, paint, and brushes. The children create a house on the tag board with the sticks and glue in place. They then can paint it. We will read the book This is my home by Bobbie Kalman. After the book we will show the children visuals of their address. Our address helps people know where we live. It also helps the mailman to make sure we get our mail. We will learn the poem/song below. The children can draw or paint the details of the home such as windows and doors. After the fa?ade is complete stand it up; if possible, secure it in the upright position. Children can create facades for different types of homes (apartment building, house, etc.) throughout the unit.Block Center: W-F Build: Provide various types of blocks and building materials for the children. Encourage them to build their own homes or the buildings near where they live. We will read the book My home in the city by Miranda Kelly Epic - Books for Kids () Open the discussion of our community our neighborhood and types of homes we see in the area. Take the children on a neighborhood walk looking at the types of homes in the area. Bring a picture chart of the typical kinds of homes in the area and tally the homes the children see. Title the chart, “Homes” highlighting the letter “H.” After the walk is completed, the class can count the tallies together and compare how many of each type of home they saw using language such as more, less or equal. (Remote children can participate having a family walk and taking pictures to send to teacher)Writing Center: The children can use the dry erase board and practice writing their name. At home you can use a piece of paper and crayons have your child practicing scribbling and model proper holding of writing utensil.
