“Mary Heard Good News” Luke 1:26-56

God sent the angel, Gabriel, to a town in Galilee called Nazareth

to a young woman, named Mary.

Mary was engaged to Joseph. The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, you are a special woman! You love and serve God, and God is with you.”

Mary was frightened by the angel and what he was saying to her.

Then the angel, Gabriel said: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have

found favor with God.

Listen carefully. You will give birth to a son, and you will call His name JESUS.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, God.”

Mary asked the angel, “How can this be?”

The angel answered her: “The power of God will overshadow you and the holy child will be born and called the Son of God.”

Mary then told the angel that she was pleased to serve God in this way.

Mary was so excited that she hurried to a town in the hills of Judah to share the good news with one of her closest relatives and friends, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth said to Mary, “You are most blessed of women, and your child, Jesus will be blessed of God.”

****************************************

1. After the story, show the preschoolers the small gift box #1. Open it slowly and take out the angel. Ask the preschoolers: “Who did God send to tell Mary about Baby Jesus? What was the angel’s name? Who did Mary go and tell the good news about Baby Jesus?”

2. Ask the preschoolers to say the Bible verse with you: “Mary will be Jesus’ mother.” Luke 1:31

Play “Hide and Seek.” Choose a child to face a wall and close his/her eyes. Hide a colorful object such as a “Read to Me Bible” or a toy. Tell the group to clap softly as he/she begins to search for the object. As he/she gets closer to the object, the class is to clap their hands loudly. Everyone cheer when the object is found. Take turns as long as children are interested.

Bible Learning Game Time

Bible Learning Activities

8:45 & 11:30 (11:00 at WH and 11:15 at Gallatin)

Intro Activity—Make

Streamers: Arrange the materials on a table for the children to assemble. Each child will need: index card, 3-4 colored crepe paper strips, and the word strip—“Thank God for Jesus.” Help the children glue the word strip on the index card. Give them angel stickers to place on both sides of the card. Then let them choose crepe paper strips and you staple the strips to the end of the index card . Turn on the CD & play Christmas songs and encourage the preschoolers to march to the music and wave their streamers.

Bible Learning Activities:

Match Letters. On a large piece of paper, print in large letters these words: Mary, mother of Jesus. Give the children one “letter card” with one of the following letters: M, a, r, y, o, f, J, e, s, and u. Ask them to match their letter to one of the letters in the sentence strip. Say the words several times. Then say: “The Bible story today is about Mary, the mother of Jesus.”

The Name Game. Invite the preschoolers to stand in a circle in a large open area. Encourage them to put their hands behind them. Select a small toy. Choose someone to be “It.” “It” walks outside the circle, puts the toy in the hands of a child, and says, “Hi, I’m _____.” The other child turns around and says, “Hi, I’m ______.” The preschoolers shake hands. Then the second child, who now has the toy becomes “It” and repeats the process. Ask the children: “What was the angel’s name? What did Mary name her special baby?”

Sew Cards. Place the cards of the stars and the angels on the tables. Be sure there is enough yarn. Help the children sew their cards. As they work on them, talk about the angel who came to tell Mary about Baby Jesus. Tell the children that the stars were brightly shining the night that Jesus was born.

10:00 (9:30 at White House)

Intro Activity—Beanbag Toss: Lay pictures of mothers and babies facedown on the floor. Invite a child to toss a beanbag on a picture, then turn it over. Say, “God chose Mary to be Jesus’ mother; God chose mothers for all children.” Pray, thanking God for mothers.

Match Pictures. Place pictures of babies and mothers face down on a table. Ask the children to take turns turning over the pictures and matching the babies’ & mothers’ pictures.

Bible Learning Activities:

Create a Fabric Collage. Cut simple geometric shapes from fabric. Say: “Mary and Elizabeth were happy about the good news of Baby Jesus. Elizabeth probably helped Mary make a warm blanket for Baby Jesus. Let’s make a blanket with pretty colors.” Help the preschoolers glue the shapes & Bible verse on sheet of paper.

Action Name Game: Tell the children to sit in a circle facing one another. Tell them when you call their names, they are to do what you ask. Suggest actions like: stretch your arms up to the sky that God made—bend and touch your toes that God made—clap your hands that God made—turn around 2 times and shake hands with a friend. Call names quickly to keep them moving and engaged. As you end, quiz them on the angel’s name & Mary’s baby’s name.
