To be – can be used as a main verb or as a helping verb in progressive tenses

Main verb: Sue is Japanese. Helping verb: Joe was teaching an hour ago.

To have – can be used as a main verb or a helping verb in perfect tenses

Main verb: Sue has two sisters. Helping verb: Joe has taught before.

To do – can be used as a main verb, or as a helping verb in making questions, making negatives, and adding emphasis

Main verb: Sue does gymnastics. Helping verb: Do you know Joe?

Helping verb: Sue doesn’t know Joe. Emphasis: I do know Joe.

Active Voice: Andrew wrote the book.

Passive Voice: The book was written by Andrew. (to be + past participle)
