Objective 10: Presentational and Interpersonal Speaking

Situation 1: Provide basic information about eating in a restaurant using phrases and simple sentences.

You are celebrating your birthday at your favorite restaurant. You’ve waited all day for this and are very hungry! Since it’s your birthday, your Spanish teacher and classmates sing “Las mañanitas” to you. They then want to know how you are celebrating. Tell them about your favorite restaurant. Name different things that you typically order and say that something is delicious and that something is good for your health. Name your restaurant and say where it is located. Describe how much your meal usually costs and that you like to eat in that restaurant.

(See Novice Presentational Rubric)

Situation 2: I can engage in short social interactions using phrases and simple sentences.

To celebrate the completion of the food unit, your teacher has organized an outing to a local Mexican restaurant. However, she has told the employees to only speak to her students in Spanish. You will play the role of a customer in the restaurant and your partner will play the role of waiter. The waiter will ask what the customer would like to order and the customer will request at least 3 items. The waiter will bring the items and the customer will say that one item is delicious, but one is too hot/cold. The waiter will ask if the customer needs anything else and the customer will say that he or she needs something. The waiter will bring the bill and both parties will thank each other.

(See Novice Interpersonal Communication Rubric)

OBJECTIVE 11: Culture: I can demonstrate understanding of practices, products and perspectives of the target culture.

Your social studies class is studying Latin America. You have to explain everything you already know about Mexico in an oral report. Your teacher gave you the following graphic organizer. Use it to demonstrate your understanding of practices (names, family relationships, lifestyle, art/architecture), products (exports, industries, handicrafts, etc.) and perspectives (where people live and why, how they live, advantages/disadvantages, comparisons/contrasts) in Mexico to help you prepare to give your report in Social Studies.
