Review of Simple Time Signatures

Top number indicates how many beats they are in a measure Bottom number indicates what note value gets the beat

Bea ts

44 oe1 oe2 oe3 oe4

Bea ts

43 oe1 oe2 oe3

Bea ts

42 oe1 oe2

The '4' indicates that the q (quarter note) gets the beat

The Conductor will generally conduct the number of beats in a given measaure in

42 1 2 3 4 23 1 2 3 22 1 2

simple time, for example in the 3/2 measure,

the conductor will show a three patern just like 3/4. The '2' indicates that the h (half note) gets the beat

41 w1 w2 w3 w4 31 w1 w2 w3 21 w1 2w

The '1' indicates that the w (whole note) gets the beat

Compound Time Signatures

Top # indicates how many of the bottom value each measure has Bottom # indiacates what note value is being used to break down the bar

Unlike simple meter, in compound meter the time signatures tells us how many units they are in a particular measure but not what gets the beat.

12 eigth notes

9 eigth notes

6 eigth notes

182 oeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoe 89 oeoeoeoeoeoeoeoeoe 86 oeoeoeoeoeoe

The '8' indicates that the ; (eigth note) is the note value used to break down the bar

182 oe1 oe oe oe2 oe oe oe3 oe oe oe4 oe oe 89 oe1 oe oe oe2 oe oe oe3 oe oe 86 oe1 oeoe2oeoeoe

The Conductor will generally conduct a

compound meter in which the dotted quarter

note gets the beat not the eigth note. The 9/8 measure will be conducted like a 3/4 measure or a 3/2 measure.

The above measre will be conducted like the bottom measure

182 oe1 . oe2 . oe3 . oe4 . 89 oe1 . oe2 . oe3 . 86 oe1 . 2oe.
