Job Title: Nursing Program Simulation Coordinator

Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree in Nursing or working towards Masters taking 6 credit hours in Nursing per year.

Credentials: Drivers license and acceptable driving record is required for coordinator; Must have RN license in Oklahoma.

Special Knowledge, Skill or Ability: Demonstrates instructional and advisement abilities. Must be able to use and demonstrate various medical equipment, computerized programs, audio-visual equipment etc. within area of instruction. Must exhibit basic knowledge of nursing simulation technology and be able to operate simulation equipment.

Training or Experience Required: Must have prior nursing work experience in the last five years; must have two years full-time practice as a RN in a clinical setting; one year in a hospital within the past five years prior to teaching.

Reports to: Director of Nursing Education

Performance Expectations: As the Simulation Coordinator, the incumbent will coordinate the general operations of the simulation equipment within the Department of Nursing Education. The purpose of this position is to serve as source of technical and general support in the development and utilization of simulation for learning within the department and its clinical facilities. The Simulation Coordinator will be responsible for the creation and implementation of simulation scenarios and debriefing. The incumbent will act as the primary resource for both faculty and students within the simulations labs.

Maintains an understanding of all four nursing courses and carries a teaching load in each course (including student grading and clinical rotations as needed); Contributes to the effectiveness of the Systematic Program Evaluation for the Nursing Program.

Has a knowledge of a variety of nursing subject matter; establishes simulation scenarios with effective instructional objectives; encourages effective learning with proper teaching techniques based on simulation best practices; ensures students are acquiring skills and knowledge to apply principles, theories and other learning within the simulation labs; provides a simulation environment which encourages independent thinking challenges for students; maintain appropriate discipline within the laboratory setting. Contributes to effectiveness/quality of college programs, including extracurricular programs; keeps accurate records, reports, etc. pursuant to college policy; actively supports and looks for ways to improve the quality of customer service; cooperates with other college personnel to improve the quality of education; when serving on committees, maintains an attitude of constructive, supportive behavioral feedback and input to improve the quality of service; continues to be involved in personal growth and development.

Job Goal (Purpose of Position): The Simulation Coordinator has the responsibility of managing the various tasks as listed below. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the creator, developer, implementer and consultant for the faculty and the students within the simulation environment. The Simulation Coordinator will collaborate with the other nursing faculty in an effort to meet the various course objectives and learning outcomes for the students. Cooperation between the Simulation Coordinator and the other nursing faculty is essential to ensure that departmental goals for simulation are met. The incumbent within this position will facilitate the education and the learning processes of the students through the construction and implementation of simulation objectives and scenarios. The process of debriefing after a simulation exercise is considered vital to student learning.

Performs responsible instructional level duties under limited supervision to teach the classes/labs or clinical assigned; responsible for 3-4 hour teaching load in each nursing course; schedules office hours to advise students; assists with student grading as needed; attends meetings and participates in overall quality of program and college.

Contact with Others: An incumbent in this position has regular contact by telephone or in person with the public to determine actual information needed. Job requires interpreting and translating facts and information, explaining situations and issues to persons and advising them of alternative courses of action.

This role also requires collaboration between the Department of Nursing and exterior agencies to ensure that community simulation goals are being met. This may involve tours of the simulation labs and the demonstration of various scenarios. In addition, the Simulation Coordinator will act as the faculty liaison by providing the utilization of the simulation equipment for such agencies in order to me their professional training initiatives.

Essential Job Functions/Performance Responsibilities:

Other than those included in the performance expectations:

1. Assist faculty to integrate simulation experiences into their nursing curriculum.

2. Plan and design simulation-based learning experiences. Create simulation scenario objectives and evaluation tools specifically related to the various simulation scenarios to ensure that learning outcomes are met.

3. Serves as faculty instructor during simulation scenarios and the debriefing periods. Travel to the distant campus sites to assist with simulation scenario set-up, implementation, evaluation and debriefing.

4. Arrangement and manipulation of the simulation mannequins and their environment for each particular simulation scenario while utilizing role-playing, props and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment

5. Obtain student and faculty feedback following simulation experiences to determine the impact of simulation on the learning process.

6. Maintain proficiency in existing and emerging technologies related to nursing simulation. Serve as the primary operational faculty of the simulation equipment. Maintain and deliver operational maintenance of the simulation equipment as needed. Provide education and technical assistance to the nursing faculty as needed to ensure their competency.

7. Schedule and coordinate the utilization of the simulation equipment with the department faculty and the exterior agencies.

8. Assess student nurse skills competency for both remediating and returning students as indicated by the faculty or the director.

9. Establishes and updates policies and procedures related to the utilization of simulation based on best practices and research.

10. Determines inventory needs within the learning labs for simulation scenarios.

11. Instructs classes/labs within area of specialty in the division according to acceptable academic standards. Studies material and prepares for lectures with necessary handouts and information to impart curriculum objectives.

12. Maintains proper discipline within classroom/ lab setting and on campus to further educational goals Reports disciplinary infractions to proper sources..

13. Maintains necessary office hours for student counseling and advisement; maintains knowledge of academic requirements for graduation and assists students in career planning.

14. Assists to update curriculum to include simulation learning experiences as needed. Makes recommendations concerning textbooks, learning resources and other material.

15. Attends faculty meetings, division meetings, in-service and other meetings. Serves on various committees to provide constructive input to resolve problems.

16. Attends various college extracurricular activities within program area, commencement exercise, etc. as required.

17. Maintains expertise/competence in the area of simulation by attending necessary conferences/seminars and/or schools as required. Attends professional meetings and participates in surveys, continuing education, academic study or clinical practice to improve own nursing competency in areas of responsibility.

18. Assists with recruiting students; provides items of interest to the Office of Public Information; Maintains proper professional contacts with others outside of the college. Serve as the simulation liaison between the Department of Nursing and exterior community agencies.

19. May perform incidental typing/data processing for class preparation or testing; may run copy machine, Scantron or other office machines; may be required to operate within computer-assisted environment.

20. Performs other duties as required.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions: Other than those physical/mental requirements included in the essential functions, employee must be able to communicate on the telephone and in person. Must be able to use or demonstrate use of equipment within department, computers, office/lab machines, ITV Technology and nursing instruments. Must be able to handle dangerous, caustic chemicals for some lab exercises. Some minor lifting may be required of the position. Must be able to assist students with nursing duties in hospital including responding quickly to emergencies if necessary. Must follow universal precautions within hospital environment. Travel all campuses is required.
