Second – know what you are being asked to find and what you are given to use.

Third – know how to apply the rules

Example 1: AB = 15 and BC = 13 find angle A.

Step 1 – label your diagram

Step 2 – determine which rule (Sin/Cos/Tan) you are to use by examining which sides you are working with.

Step 3 – write out the equation

Step 4 – fill in the equation using the information in the diagram

Step 5 – solve for the unknown

Example 2: AB = 22 and angle B = 33 degrees, find AC.

Step 1 – label your diagram

Step 2 – determine which rule (Sin/Cos/Tan) you are to use by examining which sides you are working with.

Step 3 – write out the equation

Step 4 – fill in the equation using the information in the diagram

Step 5 – solve for the unknown

Example 3: AC = 15 and angle B = 33 degrees, find CB.

Step 1 – label your diagram

Step 2 – determine which rule (Sin/Cos/Tan) you are to use by examining which sides you are working with.

Step 3 – write out the equation

Step 4 – fill in the equation using the information in the diagram

Step 5 – solve for the unknown

Example 4: The two guy wires supporting a flagpole are each anchored 7m from the flagpole and form an angle of 52 degrees with the ground. What is the total length of guy wire, to the nearest metre, to support the flagpole?
