The following are some questions enquired by Sec 1 parents and the school’s reply to these questions:CCA MattersQ1How many CCAs are students encouraged to take up?Every student is expected to participate in one CCA from any of the 4 CCA groups (Sports, Performing Arts, Uniformed Groups, Clubs & Societies)Q2(a) My son is a DSA student, will there be any arrangement made for him if he needs assistance in his academic subjects?(b) Is he required to go for training during normal lesson?a) Selected students who need additional attention from their teachers and assistance in their studies will attend remedial lessons conducted after curriculum time. The subject teachers will monitor and decide on the remedial schedule.(b) All students must attend academic classes as per the school time table. CCAs have been scheduled to start at 3.15 pm.Q3How will the choice of the CCA affect his choice of getting into his school of choice after O'Level? If he can't get into his choice of CCA, will the school allocate the CCA to him even though he did not choose it?Will the CCA be on weekend or weekday?Recognition for students’ contribution in school based CCA in Sports, Performing Arts, Uniformed Groups, Clubs & Societies is based on 4 areas namely, Participation, Achievement, Leadership and Service. In each area, there is a level of attainment, with level 1 being able to fulfil the basic requirements to level 5, which recognises student's continuous involvement and commitment to the same CCA.All students will be given a chance to state their preference in each of the 4 categories of CCA. Students will be allocated to one of their choices indicated.Main CCA day is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.15 pm to 5.30 pm. A student will need to attend both sessions.Q4Does the child still need to register for CCA if they entered through DSA?All students must attend the trial/audition conducted by the CCAs. Students must also indicate their preference during the CCA Allocation Exercise.Q5What are the development/improvement activities planned for the students?All CCAs have a comprehensive and progressive 30-week plan that develops the student in the CCA over 4 to 5 years. Students will learn new skills and will be trained adequately to prepare for competitions, exhibitions or performances. Discipline MattersQ6What are the steps taken to handle disciplinary issues outside school?Students are reminded frequently that they are ambassadors of the school and should behave appropriately in public. Teachers are deployed to patrol the neighbourhood daily before and after school to deter, detect and handle discipline issues outside school.Q7How is the discipline like in school?Discipline in the school is good and we are constantly working towards improving the overall tone of the school through values inculcation.Subject Related MattersQ8What is the examination schedule like for Sec 1? For example, how many exams for this year? Following the school exam schedule, students will have CT1, SA1, CT2 and SA2 and one graded assignment conducted in curriculum time which results contribute to CAs once per term.Q9My son attends MT class at PRSS. Can he be dismissed earlier on Tues? His class starts at 3pmThe students taking Tamil at PRCSS are allowed to leave school at 2:15pm.Q10Can my child not take higher mother tongue?The student can drop HMT if he feels that he cannot cope with it.Q11Will there be extra classes for students who are weak in certain subjects? When will we know the dates?Remedial lessons are conducted after curriculum time for selected students who may need additional attention from their teachers. The subject teachers will monitor and decide on the remedial schedule.Q12Does the school have early extra classes in the morning?Official school hours start from 7.30 am every day, except for Wed, at 8.20 am. There are no extra classes before that.Q13Would the teacher inform the parents promptly when the child starts to slack in his work before it is too late?Subject teachers will inform parents of their child's performance either directly or through the FTs. Parents may also contact the subject teachers to find out more about their child's performance.Q14How can my child qualify for the Enhanced Art Programme in Upper Secondary?The Enhanced Art Programme at Meridian is a progression from the Meridian Art Programme which continues to support the development of students who have shown interest and aptitude in Art. If your child has shown interest and aptitude in the subject and is offering 'O' level Art at Secondary 4, he/she will qualify for the Enhanced Art Programme in Upper Secondary.Q15What is the difference between the MAP Art lesson and the standard art lesson? Are both the same?The MAP provides additional support for students to develop their interest and talent in Art. The MAP programme enriches students' learning of Art through enrichment programmes. The expectation for all (MAP and non-MAP) students in the assessment of the art projects is the same. However, with the additional opportunities and support given to MAP students, we trust that MAP students will produce work which is of a higher quality.Q16What are compulsory classes for Sec 1? Is Art compulsory in your school?All subjects are compulsory for Sec 1 as it forms the foundation of their secondary school education. Yes, Art is compulsory for all Lower Secondary students in Singapore.Student Well-beingQ17How do parents help their child cope with school work?Parents need to ensure that the child completes all homework and does regular revision. There is a need to continue guiding and monitoring the child. It is important to have regular conversations with your child. If the child is still unable to cope, the parent can discuss the matter with the FT or with the YH.General MattersQ18What is the overall ranking of the school in comparison to the other secondary school?Since 2013, MOE has removed the ranking system.Q19What are some statistics for O level students going to Poly, JC etc.?As it is our first year of merger, we do not have statistics for the O Level results 2016. The results for 2017 will be released on 12th Jan. We will update our school's achievements on the school website.Q20How does the school assess academic performance?Termly assessments (written mode, performance task or other forms) are conducted regularly to gauge the learning progress of the students. Examinations are conducted twice a year at the end of each semester for all levels. Preliminary Examinations are conducted at the end of third term for students who are taking National Examination (GCE ‘N’ and ‘O’ Level Examination) at the end of the year. ................
