Integrity Award Programs Held in Des Moines and Davenport April/May, 2010

On April 15, 2010 the BBB hosted a spectacular 70th Anniversary event in conjunction with the annual Integrity Awards ceremony. Flynn Wright provided a memorable automated presentation commemorating the BBB’s many years of existence that included a historical retrospective and several personal interviews with leaders of long time Accredited Businesses. Des Moines’ one and only Issierettes Drill and Drum Corp provided some rousing entertainment.

NASCAR racing star and a developer of The Iowa Speedway, Rusty Wallace, treated over 350 guests to a talk about personal integrity and took a number of questions from the audience about his experiences as race car driver. The BBB also sponsored an unforgettable VIP evening with Rusty Wallace at Denny Albaugh’s property showcasing his extensive car collection.

The Des Moines event honored five companies for their Integrity. Award winners represent the values associated with a strong work ethic and a commitment to the community by demonstrating integrity in all of their business relationships. The winners are:

Anderson Automotive, Marion, IA. has served Iowa customers since 1999. Anderson Automotive has a BBB rating of A+. Anderson Automotive owner Jim Anderson said, "We are very honored to have been chosen to receive this great award. It is so rewarding after all the years of effort to run an honest, ethical and quality company and to have the BBB come and say, ‘You know, you are doing it right, Thank you!’"

Arnold Motor Supply, Milford, IA. has been helping to keep folks on the road for 83 years. Arnold Motor Supply has a BBB rating of A. Dennis Spooner, Managing Partner said, “We are extremely proud of Shane and his team for being awarded the Iowa Better Business Bureau’s Business Integrity Award.  He and his team exemplify our company’s standard for customer service, and they live by our motto, ‘Together we succeed’.”

Horizons, A Family Service Alliance, Cedar Rapids, IA. has been “Instilling Hope, Brightening Futures, and Changing Lives” for over 50 years. Horizons, A Family Service Alliance has an A rating with the BBB. “There is no other accolade I can imagine that reinforces the importance of Horizons’ mantra of good people, doing good things, in good ways better than the BBB's Integrity award,” said Scott Jamieson, President and CEO. 

ITAGroup of Des Moines, IA. is a recognized leader in the performance improvement industry, as well as industry sub-segments covering areas ranging from employee incentives to business travel and events. They have a BBB rating of A+. "The employee-owners of ITAGroup are extremely honored to be recognized by the BBB with the 2010 Business Integrity Award," expressed Tom Mahoney, President and CEO. "At the core of our guiding principles is a focus on doing the right thing for our people, customers, suppliers and community. Midwest Basement Systems, Des Moines, IA. has been waterproofing basements for central Iowa consumers since 1995. Midwest Basement Systems has a BBB rating of A+. The Outing Club in Davenport was a beautiful venue for the Quad Cities 2010 Business and Student of Integrity Awards ceremonies that took place on April 22, 2010. Ronald Graham, a veteran executive of the BBB system and National Director of the online training program known as BBB University spoke about the founding and history of the BBB and its truth in advertising legacy. He gave 10 interesting and sometimes amusing examples of the early work of the BBB in preventing advertising abuse. The four Business of Integrity winners demonstrating proven values of honesty, integrity and fairness are:

Brus Construction LLC of Blue Grass, IA. has a BBB rating of A+. “What a great honor to receive the BBB Integrity Award.  After 10 years in business, we feel this award truly acknowledges our core principles and our mission of providing the customer with a worry free project from start to finish with integrity, knowledge, quality and professionalism,” stated Chad Brus, owner.

Estes Construction of Davenport, IA. has a BBB rating of A. “Receiving the BBB Integrity Award is a tribute to the commitment of everyone at Estes Construction as we strive for Estes to become the ‘preferred builder’ for our clients, employees and suppliers. We deeply appreciate the recognition by the BBB of our efforts and inclusion in this group of outstanding businesses,” said Kent Pilcher, President.

Heart of America Group of Davenport, IA. has a BBB rating of A. “Heart of America Group is honored to have been selected for the 2010 Better Business Bureau Integrity Award.  When I started the company 32 years ago, we were a small staff committed to quality, honesty and integrity.  I am proud to say that after successfully operating the business for many years those principles remain true today,” stated owner Mike Whalen.

McCleary Excavating Co Inc located in Blue Grass, IA. has an A+ BBB rating. Scam Alert: Don’t Email Personal Information

You receive an email asking you to update your credit card account. It looks authentic so you take that opportunity to provide your new address and phone then within the verification phase of the update you type in your social security number, date of birth, password and credit card numbers. A few moments later you begin to second guess yourself and what you have just done.

Unfortunately you have just succumbed to an identity theft scam and the thieves now have everything they need to begin to apply for credit and order merchandise (or worse!) in your name. Your first step is to go to the Federal Trade Commission site and begin to comply with all of the steps that they recommend to prevent or mitigate problems. This includes contacting all three credit reporting agencies to establish a Fraud Alert.

Prevention is the key. Do not click on links unless you can verify that it is legitimate and know the sender. Do not ever give your personal information out over the phone or online. It is frequently difficult to tell the difference between a legitimate contact and a scam. Error on the side of caution and ask that any requests for information be sent in writing.

Advertising Review promotes truth in advertising to enhance consumer confidence in businesses that advertise. Following are cases that represent recent advertising review matters your BBB pursued. Challenges made by the BBB, using the BBB Code of Advertising, result from information given by consumers, competitors and through the BBB’s own monitoring efforts.
