Sixth Grade Scoop—January 24, 2014

Language Arts:

This week, we continued working on the different verb tenses.  On Tuesday, we studied the difference between the present and past tense of verbs.  Students learned that we use present tense verbs when the action is happening right now, and we use past tense verbs when the action happened in the past.  We completed several activities through an interactive Smart Notebook lesson where students learned the various spelling rules to help them form past tense verbs correctly.  Students then completed their assignment on Edmodo.  On Wednesday, we studied future tense verbs.  Future tense verbs are used when the action will occur in the future.  Once again, students completed several interactive activities that allowed them to identify future tense verbs and use them correctly in sentences.  Students quickly saw that future tense verbs will always have the helping verb will in front of it.  On Thursday and Friday, we focused on subject verb agreement.  Students had to identify the subject of the sentence, and then choose the correct verb based upon whether the subject was singular, plural, or joined by a conjunction.  Since this concept was more complicated, we completed several activities as a class and in groups before having an individual homework assignment.  Students also gained practice by completing their Study Island assignment.

Next week, we will learn about main verbs and helping verbs.  Students will also have a mechanics lesson that reviews placement of commas.  We will then gear up for a quiz over the first half of the unit.  The quiz is currently scheduled for Thursday, January 30, 2014.  Then we will end the week with the classroom spelling bees to help determine who will advance to the County Spelling Bee in February.  I hope you have a good weekend.

Math:

This week in math the students were introduced to chapter 5 on percents.  We started off by building up skills that we need to have in place before we actually start learning about the content. We brushed up on things like basic long division and mulitplying by decimals.  We also went over the vocabulary for this chapter.  We then moved on to modeling percentages on a grid and the students got to practice this skill by using a game that required them to help build a park with a cetain percentage of different items.  After that, we learned how to write percents as fractions and decimals.    Next week, we will learn how to write fractions and decimals as percents and do an art project that deals with percentages called optical art.  The students can expect a quiz over this material (5.1 - 5.3) on Friday, January 31st.  Just a reminder that the next round of choice boards are due at the end of chapter 6...probably somewhere around Valentine's Day.  Thank you and have a great weekend.

Social Studies:

This week in Social Studies we studied Lesson 3.  We learned how Egypt's government was started, and also how it changed over time.

Next week we will wrap up Chapter 5 with our reviewing of the Lessons.  We will be working on a study guide and studying for our quiz on Friday, Jan. 31st.  Anyone doing an extra credit project will need to turn them in on Friday, Jan. 31st.   We will present the projects on Mon., Feb. 3rd.  No late projects will be accepted.

Science:

This week in science, the students learned how paper pulp is made from trees and how paper is recycled from paper. Our recycled paper that we made during science lab last week finished drying over the long weekend. The students got to compare this recycled paper made during class with paper made from a factory. They noticed that all paper under a microscope has shredded paper fibers criss-crossed no matter if it is made from trees or recycled. We also learned about ecosystems, keystone species, endangered species, and extinction. Next week, we will learn about resources of the land/soil and mining. We will also learn about solid wastes disposal and recycling and how this impacts the environment. Enjoy your weekend!

Entry:

With this very short week, we began a mini lesson over mood in a piece of fiction and what role setting and descriptive phrases have in it. On Friday, the students watched the current segment of CNN Student News and chapter thirteen of Freak the Mighty was read with students writing and sharing a quick response afterward.

Next week will be a vocabulary week and we will continue our study of mood. We will also continue the practice of writing good, thorough extended responses. Students will again be summarizing a nonfiction passage independently and posting reflections using their rubrics for the next chapter in Freak the Mighty and/or about the next CNN Student News segment. Just a reminder that the 6 Flags Student Reading logs are due February 21st.

The results of this week’s AR Rally are:

6E: Drew 83.1 pts

Congratulations to Drew (6E) for all reaching his 80 point AR goal and moving into the checkered flag area of the Rally Board!!

6C only - Thank you to Tyrus and family for the class birthday treats!!!

******It’s getting to be that time of year when I ask for your help. Due to the district’s budget constraints and in order for the students to have an off campus AR reward, I will need to find transportation sponsors for the trip. Last year there were two corporations that sponsored the 6th grade AR reward transportation to the YMCA in Christian County. One was a company in Auburn and one was out of Springfield. The cost for the transportation was around $400 - $450. That total was divided in half by the companies. If you know of a corporation/company in our area that might sponsor this year’s reward activity, please let me know ASAP. Thank you so much for your support!!

Keep warm this weekend!
