COURSE SYLLABUS FOR SPANISH 3/4

SR. STRAND

bstrand@auburn.wednet.edu

Spanish 3 and 4 are semester-long Spanish courses which comprise the second-year high school Spanish class. Second-year Spanish will provide an opportunity to understand a new language, in an amazing collaborative environment. Students are required to take two years of the same world language in high school to be accepted into any public university in Washington. Students are encouraged to take three years of the same world language if they plan to attend the University of Washington or Western Washington University.

STUDENT OUTCOMES:

o Students will learn how to read, write, listen and speak in Spanish on an intermediate level.

o Students will learn the basics of the Spanish language through the study of vocabulary and grammar.

o Students will explore varying facets of Hispanic culture through cooking, music, films, holidays, fashion, history and geography.

o Students will gain an awareness and appreciation of value systems and ways of thinking different from their own.

o Students will understand the value of knowing Spanish for travel and career opportunities.

BASIC CLASSROOM RULES:

1. Maintain a safe environment free from physical/emotional threats.

2. Be responsible for your own actions (or inactions)

3. NO electronics allowed during learning/working times. PERIOD!

4. Be in your seat from bell to bell.

ELECTRONICS POLICY:

Electronics are NEVER allowed during learning or work times. Any violation of this policy will result in a confiscation of the phone. I will follow the school protocol of bringing the phone down to the main office to be retrieved at the end of the school day.

BATHROOM/HALL PASS PROCEDURE:

If you need to leave class to use the bathroom/visit a teacher/go to your locker etc., please simply fill out the class clipboard, and take the class bathroom pass with you. HOWEVER, if you do leave class during class time, you will be required to stay after class for two minutes. You are NOT in trouble, but rather making up the time that you missed. This is also used as a deterrent for those who would otherwise abuse this privilege.

TESTS/QUIZZES:

There will be formative assessments(quizzes) very frequently. This is in place to ensure that students are not just being taught material, but are also retaining and thus learning it. Quizzes may be retaken within one week of the original quiz date. A consultation with the teacher needs to happen first to schedule a time for the retake and discussion of how extra studying will be conducted to prepare better for the retake. Summative Assessments (Chapter Tests) are NOT eligible for retake. They consist of the material previously assessed in the formative assessments (quizzes)

HOMEWORK:

Homework and in-class assignments will happen regularly in this class. The completion of homework is mandatory in order to improve understanding of class material. Homework will be due the following day when the bell rings to start class. Stamped homework, will be worth full or no credit. There is no partial credit awarded. Copying homework or allowing someone to copy yours will result in a failing grade on the assignment.

GRADING:

Grades are weighted in this class. Here is how the grades will be weighted:

Formative Assessments (Quizzes/Projects): 25%

Summative Assessments (Chapter Tests/Projects/Final) 50%

Homework: 25%

The lowest score possible for any assignment is 40%. This states that a student has not demonstrated any level of proficiency, yet properly balances out properly a deficient skill and a skill that a student masters.

The following grade scale will apply:

93%-100+% A 77%-79% C+

90%-92% A- 73%-77% C

87%-89% B+ 70%-72% C-

83%-87% B 67%-69% D+

80%-82% B- 60%-66% D

59% and lower F

Spanish 1 and 2 are two separate classes and thus the grades for these two courses are independent of each other. Each semester’s grade is comprised of the 18-week duration of the semester and thus quarter grades are NOT averaged together to comprise the semester grade. Grade reports will go out 8 times per year. Progress reports will come out midway through each academic quarter. In addition to these progress reports First quarter and third quarter grades will come out as will final semester grades in January and June.

SKYWARD:

Students and parents are encouraged to utilize the Skyward grading module that is available online. This can be accessed at the school website auburn.wednet.edu From this page, click on the Family Access link. If you do not have an access password, please contact the ARHS Counseling Office at 804-5154 and ask for information for how to obtain that information. This is really a great way for students to monitor their progress, and for parents to look at real-time data to know exactly what their child’s grade is, and what assignments they may be missing.

LANGUAGE:

Inappropriate language is not conducive to a healthy classroom environment and will not be tolerated in my classroom. If you are not sure if something is appropriate or not, DON’T SAY IT!!!!

1st offense: Verbal warning student/teacher conference after class.

2nd offense: Student/Teacher contact with parent by phone.

3rd offense: Parent conference.

CHEATING:

The Spanish Department at Auburn Riverside High School has a very stringent policy to discourage cheating throughout its classes. Cheating includes, but is not limited to, the following:

o Online translation or other forms of plagiarism of a document.

o Copying off of another student’s test or quiz.

o Copying off of another student’s homework.

Penalty for cheating is a zero on the work. YOU ARE ALSO GUILTY IF YOU ALLOW ANOTHER PERSON TO COPY OFF OF YOUR WORK!!!

THIS WILL BE A CLEAN AND SOBER CLASSROOM!!!
