EOC

WEEKLY SCHEDULE/HOMEWORK:

• The daily schedule, homework and learning targets will be posted on my page sciencewithmsortiz. every day

• Students will bring their 5 star, 1 subject notebook to class everyday where they will insert all of their work and assignments

• Student will fill out a Daily Reflection every night for homework, where they will apply what they learned that day to the units focus, the “Big Idea”

PREPAREDNESS:

Each student is responsible for bringing all the necessary materials to class every day. If other materials are required they will be listed in the weekly schedule as homework items. Daily materials include:

• 5 Star 1 subject Notebook- Need by Friday 9/5

• Planner

• Pencil/Pen

• Colored pencil- a must

• Text book

• Highlighters

• tape

• sharpies- multiple colors

END OF CLASS PREPAREDNESS:

Preparedness is not just important for coming to class, but it is also important at the end of class. Students will be responsible for cleaning their work areas and putting all materials away properly. Due to the short amount of time between classes it is critical that students be respectful and aware of the class coming to the room next. All students will remain in their seats until the room is ready for the next class.

HOMEWORK:

• All homework is due at the beginning of each class.

• Assignments must be legible (printed assignments completed on a computer are encouraged if legibility is an issue). Illegible work will not receive credit.

• Students will NOT be allowed to retrieve homework from their lockers once class has begun. Homework items need to be brought to class when due.

• Homework will be stamped to verify effort applied to the assignment. The homework stamp does not mean that the work is complete or correct.

• All assignments will be discussed in class to provide opportunities for students to verify their work and to ask questions.

• Students are expected to go over all of their work on an assignment and fix any mistakes they may have made as we discuss a particular assignment as a class.

• Once the class has finished discussing an assignment the students are responsible for all of their work on that assignment. Mistakes and work left un-done will result in losing points when the Notebooks are graded

NOTE-TAKING:

• Note-taking is a skill that will become increasingly important to students in the coming years.

• Students are expected to take notes from books, videos, and our classroom discussions.

STUDENT WORK:

• Students are responsible for keeping track of ALL of their notes and assignment, past and present.

• Students will have a notebook that corresponds directly with everyone else in the class, as well as a teacher reference, so there is no excuse for missing work or pages in the notebook

ON-LINE ASSIGNMENTS & TESTS:

• Students will be given on-line assignments. On-line assignments will require students to access their own Skyward Student Account. The student account login and password are different from the Skyward Family Access Account given to parents which cannot access on-line assignments for students.

• It will be helpful for students to have their information written down and available in case they forget. This is especially important at the beginning of the year.

TESTS:

• Tests will be given at the end of each unit.

• Students will receive a list of topics to use as study guides about a week before the test. These topic lists are designed to help students create a set of “test notes” that can be used along with the student-work as references during the test.

• In-class test reviews will usually be scheduled the day before a test.

• Some tests may be handwritten and other tests will be taken on-line (Skyward Student Account login and password will be required to access on-line tests). There may also be performance/skill components to a test

• The assignments prior to the test are practice for the exams so the more effort you put towards the work prior to the test the better you WILL do

TEST RE-TAKES:

• This will be an issue that is address in the next month, after our first exam

• A formal document will go out to students and their families

EXTRA CREDIT:

As of now, no extra credit is available to Biology Students, but if a change in this category becomes available a formal document will go out to students and their families

GRADING:

|A |93-100% |

|A- |90-92% |

|B+ |88-89% |

|B |83-87% |

|B- |80-82% |

|C+ |78-79% |

|C |73-77% |

|C- |70-72% |

|D+ |68-69% |

|D |60-67% |

|F |59% and lower |

Class grades are simply based on the percentage of points earned.

Here is the breakdown: Labs, Participation, Assessments, and Notebooks

ABSENCES:

• Students are responsible for finding out what they have missed while they have been absent.

• Students are responsible for making up missed work in a timely manner. Students get the same number of days to make up missed work as the number of days missed.

• Students are responsible for scheduling time outside of class to make up missed lab-work if necessary.

• All handouts and worksheets are organized by day in the Assignment-Box at the front of class.

TARDINESS:

Each student is expected to be in her or his seat and ready to work when class begins. If late, not in seat when class begins, the student will fill out a late slip and it will be added to the students file. If tardiness becomes a chronic problem consequences will be issued as 101 slips.

PROGRESS REPORT/PARENT COMMUNICATION

• Contact information can be found on the BLMS website.

• Parents are encouraged to contact me via email to set up a meeting time (phone or in-person) if there are concerns/questions regarding their child’s grades or any other issues.

• In addition to the school wide mid-trimester and trimester progress reports I will post current class grades via Skyward on a monthly basis. ( This might be more often but their grades are heavily weighted in their notebooks which is one large grade for all assignments)

MESSAGE TO PARENTS FROM MS ORTIZ:

This is my 2nd year at Beaver Lake and I am very excited for this year to begin! I look forward to meeting you during “Curriculum Night”, but I realize that we will not have much time together. Feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail with any questions or concerns you may have. Also, I will be updating you daily on what we are doing in class via my web page sciencewithmsortiz.

I look forward to working with you and your children this year!
