2013 / 2014 SCHOOL YEAR

Centralia High School will start school September 3, 2013. Centralia school bus routes and times for the 2013/2014 school year will be the same as last year. If route changes are needed prior to the start of school, notification will be made to students who are on record at the transportation office and notice will be in the newspaper. For busing information, call the Transportation Co-op at (360) 330-7628.

CHS Hours 7:55 am - 2:30 pm (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)

8:20 am – 2:30 pm (Wednesday)

Students who qualified for free or reduced meals during the 2012/2013 school year will qualify automatically for the first thirty (30) days of school. A new application must be filled out each year. The 2013/2014 application must be turned in by October 15, 2013. Applications will be available in the CHS Counseling Center after the first week of school.

Breakfast

Breakfast will begin being served on the first day of school. Breakfast will be served at CAPS starting Monday, September 10th, 2012. The prices are as follows:

Senior Yearbook Pictures

Seniors are reminded to schedule a sitting for their senior color pictures.  These sittings need to be scheduled before school starts in the fall and outside regular school hours.  All senior pictures must be turned into the yearbook advisor, Mr. Ulrigg, by October 31st, so they may appear in the yearbook.  We cannot guarantee senior pictures will be included in the yearbook if they are received after October 31st.  You can also find all information on:

Appropriate Dress

CHS students are expected to dress appropriately to ensure a positive learning environment and a safe school community. Centralia High School’s dress code assists students as they prepare for the work place. Clothing should be neat, clean and decent. CHS reserves the right to revise the dress code pending new information on types of clothing, articles, or trademarks that may constitute a disruption to the educational environment or to the safety and well-being of CHS students. IF A STAFF MEMBER DEEMS A PARTICULAR STUDENT’S CLOTHING TO BE DISRUPTIVE TO THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT, THE DRESS CODE POLICY WILL BE ENFORCED.

Specific items of clothing/articles that are prohibited and are not to be worn at school or at school sponsored events may include:

• Clothing or articles that promote or display California professional sport team logos. Any clothing or articles with L.A. on them.

• Any clothing or articles displaying the number 13 or clothing or articles with South Side displayed on them.

• Bandanas (orange, black and white bandanas are allowed only during Homecoming Week).

• Students are prohibited from wearing hoods and/or gloves inside of the school building(s).

• Pants that drag excessively on the ground (this is for student’s safety).

• Belts must be secured in such a manner that no part of the belt is left hanging.

• Clothing or articles that promote alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or promote and/or display violence, sexual and/or racist messages, or the Confederate flag.

• No brief or provocative clothing. Brief/revealing garments such as halter tops, tops with spaghetti straps, tube tops, muscles shirts, tops that show cleavage, bare midriffs, or bare backs are not allowed. Tank tops must not be revealing or provocative.

• Undergarments, to include camisoles, must be covered by outerwear.

• Skirts or shorts must be no shorter than fingertip length.

• Pants or shirts with holes that are revealing or provocative are prohibited, (holes in pants must be lower than fingertip length

• No face paints (except on designated school spirit days).

• No masks that cover the entire head.

• No pajamas/robes (except on designated school spirit days).

• No sunglasses may be worn in building(s)

• No trench coats may be worn in the building(s).

Open House

Open House has been scheduled for Monday, September 9, 2013, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

Parent Meetings

Parent Advisory meetings will be held the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the CHS Conference Room beginning October 7, 2013. More information will be available at Open House on Monday, September 9th.

SENIOR HONORS CRITERIA

Senior honors are awarded to students meeting the following criteria:

• Valedictorian: The senior that has the highest academic rank based on his/her GPA. He/she delivers the valedictory address (inspiration and farewell) at graduation.

• Salutatorian: The senior with the second (2nd) highest academic rank based on his/her GPA. He/she delivers the salutation address (welcome) at graduation.

• Top Ten Honors: CHS honors the top ten scholars of each graduating class. Starting with the Class of 2009, the honor is awarded according to an index consisting of points awarded for GPA, test scores, and challenging coursework. The index consists of:

▪ Overall GPA – 60% (includes grades from Centralia College, New Market Skills Center, and high school)

▪ HSPE Scores – 15% (5% each of Reading, Math, and Writing)

▪ Challenging Coursework – 25% (students may claim a maximum of six (6) Running Start courses to be included as “challenging” coursework)

▪ Participation in a minimum of eight (8) activities, sports, or clubs

Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Top Ten Honors are determined at the end of the 7th semester. Students with any questions should see their counselor.

Student schedules will be available to individually print by students from their Skyward account on the following dates: August 22nd Ninth Grade and August 26th 10 – 12 Grades. If trouble occurs while logging into Skyward, please call the counseling center at 360-330-7609 for help beginning August 22nd.

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Any student new to the district or any student not already registered should report to the Centralia High School Counseling Center for registration on Friday, August 23, 2013, or Monday, August 26, 2013, between the hours of 8:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

The following information is required in order to be enrolled at CHS:

• An unofficial transcript from the former school if your student is grade 10-12 (not required for students beginning grade 9)

• Immunization records (complete and up to date)

• A local Centralia School District living address.  You may be asked to provide proof of residency at time of enrollment.

• If your student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), you must go to Student Support in Chehalis, Washington, first before we can enroll you.  You may want to call them at the number provided below to make an appointment first.

• A parent or guardian to help with the enrollment process.

• Proof of Washington State History.

• Former grades and transfer grades, including any guidance/discipline information.

The following are helpful, but not required:

• A cumulative portfolio

• If participating in athletics, a fee and a completed medical physical is required

• Once the student is approved for enrollment, the student will visit the correct counselor and plan a course of study.

• If transportation is necessary, please call 360-330-7628 to arrange bus service.

• Free and reduced lunch forms are available in the counseling center. Income qualification guidelines are included in the form. If you qualify, please enroll in the free lunch program.

• Students will be required to know and understand their rights and responsibilities as listed in the student handbook. This includes dress codes, appeals, calendars of school activities, and much more.

• Lockers, pictures, ASB Cards, and classroom needs can be procured as soon as the student is enrolled.

• We offer many alternatives to a traditional high school setting, including, CAPS (our alternative high school setting) and many others. Please speak with your counselor regarding this.

Special Needs and Circumstances:

• If your student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), you must go to Student Support in Chehalis,

Washington first before we can enroll you.  You may want to call them at the number provided below to make an appointment first.

• If your student has been in honors, advanced placement, gifted or advanced course work, English Language Learning, or has any other need, please indicate this at the time of enrollment; and we will provide you with the proper services.

• If you and your student need interpretive language help, please contact us and we can provide services.

Outside CSD Students:

Students residing outside of the Centralia School District will be required to fill out district transfer paperwork releasing them from their school district of residence. This paperwork must then be approved by the Centralia School District to complete the approval process. Once the approval process is complete, the student will enroll with the normal enrollment procedures.

2013-2014

ORIENTATION DATES 2013-2014:

Fall start New Student Orientations for the 2013-14 school year will be held during the week of August 19 – 23, 2013. Parents will be contacted with their appointment time after an application has been completed and returned to CAPS staff. Students must bring completed applications and be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Orientation lasts about an hour and 15 minutes.

Additional monthly New Student Orientations are then held once each month through April 2014. Parents or guardians must attend this meeting for enrollment to proceed.

Please note that attending Orientation does not ensure acceptance.

For 2013-14 the dates are:

September 19, October 24, November 28, December 12, January 16, February 20

March 20, April 17.

Students are sent home with orientation materials and assignments to complete and they begin school the following Tuesday at 8:00 am. If materials and assignments are not completed students may not begin class that month.

All students coming from outside the Centralia School District must first complete a Choice application that they pick up at their current school district’s office, fill out and return it to our School District Office. Choice student orientation materials are not accepted at CAPS until the student has been accepted by our School District Superintendent. Contact will be made by our District Office notifying them of their Choice approval status.

Once a Choice student has been approved by the District Office, CAPS application materials may be submitted to the CAPS office. When all required information is received at CAPS and a final review has been made, an orientation date may be established.

Athletic Clearance Check List

Please make sure ALL of the items listed below are complete before you turn your Clearance Form in to Ms. Longabaugh in the Athletic Office. If all items are not complete, you will not be able to turn it in until it is complete. You must be cleared BEFORE the first practice in order to turn out for practice. Clearance packets to play V,JV, 9th Football should be turned in by August 15th and all other Fall Sports should be turned in by August 21st. Clearance packets must be turned in to the Athletic Office – not to the Coach!

ASB Card Information

An ASB Card is required to participate in CHS Sports. The cost of the card is $35 and needs to be paid by the first practice. The ASB Card fee is a yearly fee for sports.

Athletic Participation Fee

An Athletic Participation Fee of $25 also needs to be paid by the first practice. The Athletic Participation Fee is a per sport fee.

Dates/Location for Physicals

Northwest Pediatrics will be offering sports physicals on the following dates and times. The physicals are limited to 100 students each night. Please see Ms. Longabaugh in the Activities Office to sign up for a time slot.

Insurance Information

All students turning out for athletics must be covered by a medical insurance that meets the requirements of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). If you do not have insurance, or a policy that qualifies, insurance forms are available in the Athletic Office beginning August 19th that offers policies you can purchase.

GIRL’S SWIMMING – Monday, August 26th

Practice will be from 3pm-5pm at Thorbeckes Pool. Please come ready to swim with water bottles, cap, goggles, and competitive style practice swim suit. Coach is TBD.

GIRL’S SOCCER – Monday, August 26th

The first practice will be Monday, August 26th at 8:30am on the track at Tiger Stadium. Please wear flats or running shoes for this practice. Afternoon practice will be 3:30pm-5pm at the Stadium. Shin guards and cleats are needed for the afternoon practices. Contact Coach Parke at 360-736-6772 for more information.

CROSS COUNTRY – Monday, August 26th

Practices will be from 3pm-5pm the first 2 weeks on the track at Tiger Stadium. Bring water and wear running clothes and good running shoes.  Proper shoes are very important for running high mileage on pavement.  Inexpensive cross training shoes will not work.  South Sound Running in Olympia is the best place to go.   Also, , Athlete’s Corner and Big 5 are additional sources. Asics and Brooks are 2 excellent brands of running shoes, but it all depends on fit.  Expect to spend $80-$100.  It is very, very important that runners have good shoes! Fines and Obligations

Please clear all old fines and/or obligations and turn in all overdue books by the first day of school, Tuesday, September 3rd. This can be accomplished by stopping by our CHS ASB Office this summer Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm, beginning Monday, August 12, 2013.

During the school year, obligations are updated every day and can be looked up on the website at any time. To do this, parents will need their student’s login and password and will then need to follow the steps below:

Yearbook Cost:

The cost of the yearbook is on a sliding scale, $65.00 with ASB, $68.00 without ASB.  The cost of the yearbook will increase to $73.00 after January 2, 2013.   If you have not purchased your yearbook by January 10, 2014, you are taking a chance that you will not receive one.

Class Fees:

You can begin paying for class fees the first day of school. All class fees for the first semester need to be paid by September 30th.

Students who participate in CHS Athletics are required to purchase an ASB Card prior to their first practice.

Athletic Participation Fee:

An Athletic Participation Fee of $25 must be paid prior to the athlete’s first practice in order to be eligible.

Parking Lot Spots/Permit ($10.00)

For security reasons, students who park their cars on campus will be required to register with the office and required to place a parking tag in a visible spot in their vehicle. Parking tags will be available at registration and will cost $10.00 for the current year. Please fill out the form located on the last page of this letter and bring it to Mrs. Habersetzer at the ASB Office. Unregistered and untagged cars will be towed from campus for security reasons.

Reminder: The reserved parking spots are for those staff whose jobs require frequent entry and exit or for certain designated students only.
