English Foundations Honors 0965Ms. K. Welsh Semester I: 2014-2015 email: krwelsh@rochester.k12.mn.us Website & Blog: Under Construction; I will send a Skyward message when completed.Course Information: As indicated in the registration guide, this semester course is designed for ninth grade students who are willing and ready to dig deeper and stretch themselves in a language arts course. This course is intended to reinforce the language arts skill areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking while promoting higher level thinking skills. We will focus our semester on each of these areas of English by using short stories, poetry, and non-fiction.Classroom Expectations:Be respectful…to each other, to teachers, to staff, to anyone who enters our room.Be responsible…for your thoughts, your words, your actions, and your community.Be ready…to learn. It’s your education. In the event that these expectations are not followed, students will be asked to address and solve the problem. If a student cannot solve the problem or chooses not, I will do something. Consequences will depend on each student and each situation. If the problem is severe parents and/or administration will be contacted as well.Course Materials: You will need the following supplies this semester:pens (blue or black in only)#2 pencils2 notebooksfolderflash drive Grading Scale: A = 90-100%C = 70-79 %B = 80-89%D = 60-69 %Note: Grades will be calculated based on a combination of two categories: Practice and Summative Assessments. Practice will account for 30% of your grade and Summative Assessments for 70%. A final grade of 80% or higher is required to receive honors credit in an honors class.Homework: Honors students can be expected to receive homework throughout each semester. Some homework assignments will be corrected in class; others will be collected and corrected for a grade. Your job as a student is to complete all homework assignments; they are given to you to help you learn and refine new skills and are geared to help you with the assessments. Writing: Writing is a complex process and may require more than one attempt to achieve mastery. All final drafts of major assignments must be typed using MLA format. You are encouraged to use the Literacy Lab in 2-1333 for additional help. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is taking the ideas, concepts, facts, and/or words of another and using them as one’s own. It is considered a form of stealing. Plagiarism will not be tolerated in this course. If you plagiarize on any written assignment, you will earn a grade of zero and will be required to redo the assignment.Attendance: Consistent attendance is crucial for success in school.Be on time. If you are late, have a pass. Excessive tardies will be dealt with on an individual basis. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Check our classroom weekly calendar, ask a friend, check our class blog to find out what you have missed. Late Work: Late work is frustrating and creates habits that will hinder your success in school and in the work force. Work is due on its assigned due date. If the assignment is not done, you will have the opportunity to complete it during Homework Lunch. Please do not turn in late assignments via email; they should always be handed to Ms. Welsh by you (that way I know you handed it in and you know I received it).The final deadline for late work is the Friday preceding the end of the quarter. All late work should be finished before the assessments are given in order to provide adequate practice and preparation for each assessment of the standards. Make-Up Work: I do understand that life happens and sometimes an absence cannot be avoided. In the event you are gone, please see Ms. Welsh as soon as possible. Your missed work is your responsibility. You will have two (2) days to make up assignments and one (1) week to make up any missed quizzes or tests. Check with Ms. Welsh for a time that works for both. Options include Ms. Welsh Wednesdays, a mutual open hour, or by appointment. Note that unexcused absences and/or tardies are considered unacceptable and will require contact with parents and/or administration.Ms. Welsh Wednesdays: For students in need of finding a time to make up work or in need of extra help, I offer Ms. Welsh Wednesdays. In addition to my open hours and by appointment, I do offer to be available to my students each Wednesday. I am in my classroom from 7am to 4:15pm. Students may come in at any time for the assistance they need.Digital CitizenshipUse technology, including cell phones, tablets, and any other electronic devices in an appropriate manner. Students should only have them out in class when they may be utilized for academic purposes. If you’re unsure if it is ok to have your device out, please ask. Practice good digital citizenship at all times. For example, be mindful that cell phone etiquette dictates that a person never takes a video or picture of anyone without getting permission first. Cell phones and other technology are useful tools for responsible learners. Food: Food is not allowed in the classroom, however water bottles are permitted.Quarter One AssessmentsFiction terms and analysisAnalyzing Point of View and Figurative LanguageTone, Mood, Imagery, and Diction-------------------------------------------------------Read and Comprehend Literature and other Text: self-select and read widely (This is a year-long standard begun in Sept. and assessed 4th qtr.)Narrative/Creative Writing Portfolio (This is a year-long standard, begun in Sept. and assessed 4th qtr.)Quarter Two AssessmentsTextual EvidenceResearch Paper ................
