Course Description

This course focuses on building the student’s analysis, interpretation, and research skills through a study of world literature, culture, and arts. Students will

o interpret and evaluate complex works of literature applying specific criteria that represent an informed opinion or response.

o explore the social, cultural, and historical background of literary works from around the world.

o develop research skills.

o apply critical approaches interpreting and analyzing literature.

o apply stylistic techniques in writing.

Assessment

Grades will be assessed through homework / classwork (40%) and assessments (60%). Students will be given a rubric for each assessment to understand the criteria for attaining the highest grade possible. The end result will be a percentage grade:

100 – 90 = A

89-80 = B

79-70 = C

69-60 = D

59 and below = F

Daily homework has two purposes: practice of a skill and/or preparation for class activities or discussions. Homework and class work will be assessed on a scale of 0 - 5 or checked for completion. Homework does not include long term assignments, projects, papers, or assessments.

Students’ final semester grades will be based on the following formula: 42.5% Quarter 1, 42.5% Quarter 2, and 15% Final Exam.

Students are expected to complete their own work. If a student is found guilty of cheating or plagiarizing he or she will receive a zero on the assignment and be subject to the building discipline plan.

Attendance

Consistent attendance is crucial for success in school. If a student is late, she or he is responsible for what they have missed. The google class website is a great way to keep up with what is done during class time. This website is accessible via the internet and the Sharpschool page on the district website. Handouts and schedules will also be posted on the website as well. There is also a calendar posted in class that outlines the same details concerning what is done during class time. If there are any questions regarding what he or she has missed during class, I am more than happy to set up a meeting to clarify any details/questions. Be on time. If a student is late, he or she must have a pass. Excessive tardies will be dealt with according to school policy.

Make-Up and Late Work

If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to find out what he or she has

missed, assignments may be found on the webpage, skyward, and/or in the bin in the back of the room. All work should be made up within a reasonable time; district policy allows two days for each excused day missed. Long term assignments will be due on the day the student returns unless other arrangements have been made. Make up work not made up in a reasonable amount of time will become late work.

( Late work is not expected.

• Unexcused late work handed in before summative (final/unit) assessment will not receive an A or a B. (20% reduction)

• Unexcused late work handed in after summative (final/unit) assessment will receive a 50% reduction.

• Unexcused late work will not be accepted if handed in after the quarter it was due

( A late work cover page will be completed and stapled to all late assignments. These pages are available next to the late work basket. Late assignments (excused or unexcused) will not be graded until a slip is attached.

( Late work is to be turned into the tray in the back of the room. The teacher is not responsible for late work submitted in any other way.

( Extenuating circumstances occur; these will be dealt with on an individual basis. It is the student’s responsibility to initiate a discussion with the teacher if he/she believes the circumstances leading to a late assignment deserve consideration for leniency.

Classroom Procedures

Communication: One key to success in school is communication. I am available by appointment before/after school and during my free periods (7th prep). Help is also available during the school day in the English Resource Center (2-106). Outside of school, the easiest way to contact me is via email, using the address at the top of the front page.

Maintaining healthy communications with fellow students is also a key factor in maintaining a successful classroom. Bullying or name calling, based on whatever reasons (gender, race, ethnicity, intelligence, physical appearance, etc.) will not be tolerated.

Passes: It is critical that students use class time efficiently. Please limit pass requests to emergencies. Habitual requests will be denied. Please do not request a pass without your planner.

Textbooks: Students are responsible for novel(s) and texts checked out to them. All texts are bar coded. Students will be charged for the replacement costs of texts that are not returned.

Food: No food will be allowed in class unless during designated days told in advance by the teacher. Beverages in a sealed bottle are fine. Failure to dispose properly of garbage will result in not having this opportunity.

Cell phones, I-pods, backpacks, etc.: These items may be a distraction to learning. . Cell phones and I-pods should to be turned off unless permission has been granted for academic purposes. Students will be given one warning and then the item will be taken away for the class period. Also, backpacks should be placed out of the way of traffic so that people do not trip over them.

****All rules and regulations not listed here but mentioned in the R-Book or the “District’s Rights, Rules and Procedures” handbook also apply.

Severe Disciplinary Issues: Severe disruption or disciplinary problems will result in a disciplinary referral

Emergency Procedures: In case of an emergency evacuation, lockdown, or drill, please follow the directions provided by the teacher and the procedures posted at the front of the room near the door.
