Questions:

Answer the following questions completely. Although you do not need to use complete sentences, you do need to answer completely and with details.

Chapter 3

1. According to Cherry, how were the Greasers and the Socs different? They have a different set of values; the Greasers are more emotional.

What made Ponyboy feel that they were not completely different?

Cherry and Marcia are very nice and don’t act any different than the Greasers.

2. How had life been unfair to the Greasers? They don’t always get whatever they want, unlike the Socs who tend to get whatever they want and don’t have to work hard for things.

3. What did Ponyboy mean when he said as he awoke in the field “the stars have moved”? It was later a lot later in the evening.

4. How did Darry react when Ponyboy finally came home?

He was very angry; he yells at Ponyboy and then ends up slapping him.

Why did he act this way?

He acted this way because he was worried about where Ponyboy was. If the boys get into trouble, they won’t be allowed to stay together and Sodapop and Ponyboy would be sent to a boys’ home (similar to foster care).

5. What did Ponyboy decide to do to change his life?

Ponyboy decided that he was going to run away.

Why did he change his mind?

He realized that he didn’t really have it that bad. At least he had people who noticed him and took care of him. (Unlike Johnny whose parents didn’t notice him or care about him).

Literary Device: Cliffhanger

A cliffhanger in literature is a device borrowed from silent serialized films in which an episode ended at a moment of heightened tension or suspense. In a book it is usually placed at the end of a chapter to encourage the reader to continue on to the next part. What is the cliffhanger at the end of Chapter Three? “Things gotta get better, I figured. They couldn’t get worse. I was wrong.” (page 52)

Chapter 4

1. Why did the Socs come looking for Ponyboy and Johnny? Ponyboy and Johnny were hanging out earlier in the evening with the Socs’ girls (Marcia and Cherry).

2. Why did Johnny behave in an uncharacteristically violent way? The Socs were trying to drown Ponyboy in the fountain; they also had a blade, so Johnny feared for their lives.

3. Why did Ponyboy and Johnny turn to Dally for help? They realized they needed to get a gun, money, a plan, and run away. Of all the Greasers. Dally would be the one that would be able to help them.

What did he do for them?

He gave them a loaded gun, $50, and a plan to head to an old abandoned church on top of Jay Mountain.

4. Why did ponyboy feel that he and Johnny would be in hiding for the rest of their lives?

• Johnny killed a Soc and the Socs would never let that go. They knew a punishment would have to be made.
