A YOUNG PASTOR’S EFFORT IS ENDORSED

BY DR. JAMAL HARRISON BRYANT

If a young man moves from Baltimore to Virginia Beach with nothing but his wife, their car and their clothes, can he build a church from scratch? Well if you ask any of the 100+ members of the Virginia Beach Worship Center they will tell you yes. Melrick Bogier, born and raised in Baltimore, felt a divine call to Virginia Beach-a place that he had never been to before, to plant a church. This church, the Virginia Beach Worship Center, held it’s first service on Sunday, January 8, 2006 and has been growing at an astounding rate ever since.

Beginning with 5 people in his living room, Pastor Bogier has been a pied piper for those who were looking for God in a “real way”. For about 90 minutes, Theater #14 at the AMC Theaters in Lynnhaven Mall was transformed into a sanctuary. Every Sunday, new faces would join in to dance and sing and experience something brand new. This whole experience would then culminate with a message from this 29-year old man full of charisma.

“Pastor always gets me from the beginning of his messages because he would have a title that would force me to listen.” says Glenn Patterson. Although young, this energetic preacher would speak with oratorical prowess beyond his years as he stands flat-footed and speaks about family, sex, violence and fighting the urge to cuss someone out. With topics such as “If Only All Men Were Dogs” “I’m In Love With A Stripper” and “I’m Giving Everyone The Finger” this Baltimore native is grabbing the attention of Virginia Beach and the remainder of the Hampton Roads region.

With his use of slang terms and hip-hop references he is compared to another Baltimore native, his mentor, Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant. “Pastor Bogier is going to be a force to be reckoned with. His passion for people and his pursuit for excellence are not to be taken lightly. Virginia Beach will never be the same again. The worse thing one can do is to underestimate a man with faith who is focused!” Dr. Bryant is the founder and senior pastor of the six year old 10,000+ member Empowerment Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church of Baltimore.

The services, or Pastor Bogier’s preference of Celebrations, are saturated with audiovisual extras and multimedia assets. From a choreographed mixture of live and recorded music to rappers, dancers and of course…”the screen”, this church is designed for today’s generation. But this has not stopped those over the age of 40 to call this their church.

”I’ve come here for one reason and one reason only, to fulfill the vision and calling that God has put on my life. That calling is to touch people with a gospel that is simply timeless,” preaches Bogier, “For this reason, 95% of our promotions are directed to those who don’t go to church”. Virginia Beach Worship Center’s radio spots are only aired on 95.7 R-N-B and Z104, two of the leading hip-hop stations of the area.

Connecting with one of the prominent leaders in Hampton Roads, Bishop B. Courtney McBath, as a member of the Calvary Alliance of Churches and Ministries, VBWC is quickly becoming an integral part of the community.

Because of it’s continued growth, on Sunday, October 1, 2006 Pastor Bogier led a motorcade from the AMC Theaters to VBWC’s new home at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel & Conference Center. Bogier explains that “This relocation will allow us to further help people to grow. We will now be able to build a children’s program in conjunction with our partnership with Plaza Elementary School, a local year-round school in Virginia Beach. Furthermore, this facility will allow us to also house our church-wide Bible Study, rehearsals, baptisms and so much more. For lack of a better term, VBWC will be able to operate out of one location without actually having one. So, here we grow again.”
