4447540-184785Name: ____________________Chanco Saves Jamestown Part 1The year 1619 is called the “Red Letter Year” in Virginia history, because three important things happened. In that year the planters were given the right to make their own laws with the House of Burgesses. A second important thing happened when the first Africans were brought against their will to Virginia from Angola as slaves to work in the tobacco fields. There were about twenty of these Africans. They were sold as servants to some of the tobacco planters. Soon other Africans were brought to Virginia. They helped the planters do the work on their plantations to make agriculture the main profit of the economy. The third important thing in the Red Letter Year happened with the Virginia Company decided to send English women to Virginia to marry young planters. There were some married planters in the colony already, but there were also many who were not married. They needed wives to make homes for them, and there were not many young women in Virginia. It was an exciting day when the first shipload of women came into Jamestown. Young planters from all over the colony were there to meet the women. Soon all of them had married. The women went with their husbands to make new homes and start families, which in turn enabled Jamestown to become more permanent. These were the days of the Pocahontas Peace, and the Indians were friendly. The Great Chief Powhatan had died, and the Indians had a new Great Chief named Opechancanough. Opechancanough said he would keep the Pocahontas Peace, just as Powhatan had done. He did for a few years. Indians went to see the planters whenever they wished to go. They could trade at any plantation. They often stayed for a meal at a planter’s house. A planter was not surprised when he saw Indians coming to see him. He never thought of driving them away. Indian boys went to live with some of the planters. These boys worked on the plantations and learned how the English lived. The planters tried to teach them to be Christians.Chanco was one of these boys. He lived with a kind planter named Richard Pace. Pace’s plantation was across the James River from Jamestown in what is now Surry County. Richard Pace treated Chaco as he would treat his own son. He took the Indian boy to church on Sundays. He was good to him in every way.A good man named George Thorpe came to live in Virginia to help the Indians. George Thorpe did everything he could to make Opechancanough his friend. He even built an English house for him. The chief seemed very proud of his house. No other Indian had one like it. No other Indian’s house had a wooden door with a lock and key. Opechancanough spent a long time every day locking and unlocking his door with the wonderful key. What year was called the “Red Letter Year”? 1607161916191633 What was the House of Burgesses?
