Children On The Autism Spectrum: From First Words To Social Conversations

Registra- SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

This two-day seminar is designed to meet the unique

tion page communication and social needs of children with autism and other

developmental disabilities--children who struggle to speak and/ or may lack the motivation and skills needed for social interaction. Building on current treatment methods from the field of speechlanguage pathology as viewed through the eyes of a behavior analyst, this seminar draws from multiple treatment frameworks to gain insight into reasons that some children make minimal progress. Specific methods to enhance functional communication skills, teach more advanced language skills, and build social interaction and conversational skills in the context of a social skills club will be identified and illustrated via video.

Day One will focus on children who live with little or no verbal skills. Learn practical and easily implemented interventions designed to:

1. Reduce problem behavior and promote cooperation 2. Contrive motivation for communication 3. Teach functional communication (via sign language) 4. Increase and shape functional verbal vocal communication 5. Promote multiword utterances

Day Two will focus on teaching prerequisites to conversation. Learn systematic, research-proven methods to effectively transfer skills from therapy to social situations to:

1. Contrive motivation for social interaction and joint attention

2. Teach foundational skills needed for conversation (labeling, receptive, and answering WH questions regarding shared interests)

3. Create opportunities to instruct children to request attention and ask "WH" questions

4. Directly instruct social skills and conversation 5. Promote spontaneous application of skills in the

context of a "social club"

Children Who Struggle to Speak The Kaufman Speech To Language Approach

SEMINAR DESCRIPTION

Many children are unable to speak or are unintelligible because they either lack an adequate repertoire of consonants and vowels in isolation, or because they have difficulty combining the oral motor movements necessary to form words. Quite often the above deficiencies are rooted in the neurological condition of apraxia of speech. Due to the prevalence of this condition, it is important that early intervention clinicians be comfortable diagnosing and treating this population. In fact, ASHA has issued a position stating that the individual best able to diagnose and treat apraxia of speech in children is the SLP.

This clinical seminar will focus on evaluation and treatment. Introduced will be the key concepts of phonemic simplification, successive word approximations and pivot syllables, and how treatment interventions derived from these concepts have proven highly effective in increasing speech intelligibility in children with apraxia of speech and other speech sound disorders.

Functional and focused on interventions, actual treatment session video clips appear early and often throughout the lecture. The easy-to-incorporate methods, strategies and techniques presented will provide clinicians with the necessary tools to help children with apraxia of speech begin progressing immediately from a simple core vocabulary toward phrases and eventually to sentences and even conversational speech.

Learn how incorporating phonemic simplification into your treatment sessions can quickly and dramatically improve speech intelligibility.

SPEAKER

Nancy R. Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP, is the owner and

Director of the Kaufman Children's Center for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor, and Social Connections, Inc. located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Since 1979, Nancy has dedicated herself to establishing the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol (K-SLP), a treatment approach to help children become effective vocal communicators. She serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America (CASANA) and is the Speech and Language Pathologist Consultant for the Parish School and Carruth Center in Houston, Texas. Nancy received the 2011 Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan Speech-LanguageHearing Association, and she was the recipient of the 2010 Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences. The Kaufman Children's Center (KCC) received the Clinical Service Award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association and Corp! Magazine's Best of Michigan Business award. Nancy is also an honoree of the Lawrence Technological University Leaders & Innovators program. She is the author of the Kaufman Speech Praxis Test for Children, the Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment Kits for Children, the K-SLP Workout Book, the K-SLP Mutt Family Practice Puzzle, the Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol Instructional DVD Set, and co-author of K&K Sign to Talk: Nouns and K&K Sign to Talk: Verbs. Nancy lectures locally, nationally, and internationally on the subject of childhood apraxia of speech and other speech sound disorders in children. Many specialists in the field of applied verbal behavior (AVB) have adopted the K-SLP for children with autism spectrum disorders. Families from around the United States and the world travel to the KCC to participate in intensive and specialized therapy programs. Nancy received her B.A. at Michigan State University and M.A. at Wayne State University, having been awarded a graduate assistantship. The KCC continues to grow and has earned a reputation for excellence, warmth, and successful outcomes. Nancy has three grown children and resides with her husband in West Bloomfield, Michigan.
