PLACE: (JAPAN)

TIME PERIOD: (1100-1800)

FOCUS TOPICS: (Japanese Feudalism )

Japanese Feudalism: Early Japan was ruled by an emperor, but in the 1100s, the emperor (leader) lost most of his power. The landowners became more interested in living rich than ruling, this means that Japan did not have one government that made rules/ laws for the people. As a result many problems grew. The landowners became warlords, the many landowners fought each other for power and people wanted protection, in this time wars were common. This led to Feudalism in Japan, meaning no one person held power over all of Japan. Just like European Feudalism poor farmers paid the lords taxes for the right to farm on the lord/ landowners land. The lords/ landowners of Japan are called daimyos. In return for the farmers work and taxes, the daimyo used his samurais to protect these poor farmers. Samurai were warriors (see picture to right.)

The daimyo (landowner) gave some land to warriors called samurai. Although samurai did not have as much power as a daimyo their job as to be loyal, brave, honorable, and live by a strict code known as bushido. Honor was extremely important under this code. A samurai who betrayed the code was expected to commit ritual suicide known as seppuku. A samurai was expected to train as a warrior, learn sword fighting, meditate and to serve the daimyo before anything else.

PLACE: (EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA)

TIME PERIOD: (1300’s Current Era)

FOCUS TOPICS: (Bubonic Plague/ also called Black Death)

In the 14th century (the 1300's), a horrible disease struck Asia, Africa, and Europe. The people called this illness the Black Death, also known as the Bubonic Plague, or just the plague. Medieval doctors could not figure out the reason for the disease, due to very little knowledge about the plague that they had at the time. Only few people had ideas about how the plague spread, but at the time no one was really sure.

The biggest problem with the plague was that so many people died, this caused a shortage of people that were available to work on farms. If the plague struck a town in summer, there were not enough workers to gather crops in the fall.  If it struck in the winter, there were not enough workers to plant in the spring. After a period of time, small farming villages and towns disappeared because there was no one left to farm the land.  The few who survived moved to other lands. Many skilled workers died and their shops remained empty.  Churches had no priests , lords did not have enough servants to work on their manors.  The plague was so bad, and people were so afraid of the plague that sometimes there was no one to bury the dead.

H.W. # 8

PLACE: (EUROPE)

TIME PERIOD: (1500s)

FOCUS TOPICS: (The Protestant Reformation)

The Protestant Reformation was a big change in history. The Reformation affected religion in Europe, society, government, and the economic as well.  The Reformation's leaders were Martin Luther and John Calvin they started the Reformation. Both of these leaders started as educated as priests for the Roman Catholic Church.  People started to follow Martin Luther and John Calvin, they became known as protestants because they were protesting against the Roman Catholic Church.

Church Corruption: One of the early reasons why people started to get upset with the Catholic Church was the burning of Jan Hus, a priest that spoke out against the Roman Catholic Church. By the 1500s the Roman Catholic Church was the most wealthy and powerful organization in Europe.  Many church leaders lived more like kings, than priests, and became so powerful that they even got involved in decisions that a king or queen would usually make. To raise money, the church increased the amount of money it charged for services such as, marriage, communion, and baptism. The church also began the sale of indulgences, which were letters that anyone could forgave them for bad things they did in life. Priests and the church convinced people that they had the power to forgive people for their wrong doings, and by buying indulgences followers would be able to get to heaven. This caused people of Europe to get angry with the church, and many people wanted reforms/changes to be made. Martin Luther: Martin Luther was a German priest who was worried about the sale of indulgences.  In 1517, he wrote his 95 Theses, which were 95 reasons that he came up with about why the church should not sell indulgences. He put these complaints on the door of a church in protest. The Catholic Church ordered Luther to take his complaints back, but he would not.  The church excommunicated him meaning they threw him out of the Roman Catholic Church for life. The church would have had Martin Luther killed if they been able to capture him, but he escaped.  Luther's ideas spread quickly throughout the Germany and Scandinavia, mainly due to the new printing press.  Luther's beliefs are what led to the Protestant Reformation: which was the creation of Protestant Churches, which were Christian Churches that separated from the Roman Catholic Church. They were not part of the Roman Catholic Church. One of the changes that Protestant Churches made was that only God could forgive people for their wrong doings, not the church, priests, or the pope.
