Social Studies 9 Assignment 1

The Branches of Canada’s Federal System

[pic]

Ask yourself “What is the function of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government”?

This is definitely a loaded question that will take a while to answer. Therefore, it is wise that in order to explore the answer, we create a concept map.

A concept map is a chart that starts with the central concept on top and flows down. I have provided a template in the front of the class to get you started.

In groups of ______________, you will need to research the three branches of government paying special attention to the relationship and tensions between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The concept map will explain the role of each of the three branches in creating and implementing laws.

Your research of the three branches will be aimed towards the five following categories:

1. purposes and mandate of each branch

2. main activities and components of each branch

3. power relations among the branches—the authority that each branch has over the other branches

4. collaborative interactions among the branches—how they support or complement each other in completing their roles

5. tensions and safeguards—how the branches may limit or influence the other branches.

When creating your concept map be sure that it:

• contains accurate and important information

• offers insightful information about the relationships and power structure

• uses clear and expressive words

• is visually effective (add pictures) and easy to understand.
