Welcome to 6th grade Humanities! I look forward to working with you this year!

Language Arts

Writing: Students will be involved in Writer’s Workshop. Writer’s Workshop is an instructional approach that views writing as an ongoing process that focuses on the procedures for planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing writing. Writer’s Workshop allows students to work at their own pace and be at different stages of writing than their peers. Writer’s Workshop allows for more student choice in writing, opportunities for individual student-teacher conferences, and more specialized instruction.

Reading: A Reader’s Workshop unit promotes a love of reading through student choice while developing the skills of our rigorous standards. In these units, students have several choices of books, and titles represent a range of reading levels and interests with a common focus or theme. Students read at their own pace: most will read multiple titles and enjoy the opportunity to make their own choices about what to read within the framework of the workshop theme. Even in a shared reading unit, in which students read a common novel, students make choices during their reading time about how the skill lessons are applied in their journals, discussions, and reflections.

Social Studies

Ancient History, including Early Humans and the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, The Israelites, Ancient Greece, Rome, and the rise of Christianity will be our area of study. Focus will be on historical, cultural, geographic, and political aspects of these ancient civilizations.

Social Studies Course Material:

Discovering Our Past A History of the Word. McGraw-Hill Education, 2014. Students will have an account to access the book online. There will be a set of textbooks in class.

Materials:

Students will need one composition book for Writing/ Reading Workshops. Please bring your planner, binder, pencils, pens, notebook paper, and an outside reading book with you each day to class.

Student Responsibility:

All assignments are important to learning. It is necessary for all assignments to be completed and turned in on time. No matter how planned and organized we are, sometimes life has other ideas. Please be proactive and communicate with me if you are going to be absent or if you cannot meet a deadline. Responsible students do this before an assignment is due. If you are absent, please check the website from home to see what you missed. For each excused day of absence, you have one additional day to get work in. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up the work you missed and schedule any make up tests or quizzes. You are expected to adhere to the PCMS Academic Integrity/Honesty Policy (see planner). Plagiarism, or academic dishonesty, is presenting someone else’s ideas or writing as your own. Do not plagiarize.

Class Expectations:

• Show Respect

o Students respect themselves, their peers, staff and the school

• Make Good Decisions

o Students take responsibility for their behavior and their learning.

• Solve Problems

o Be prepared with materials on hand, and be a problem solver!
