Circulating Books, Electronic Books, and U.S. Government Documents

Use the following steps to find books, e-books, and U.S. government online documents on wide-ranging topics:

✓ Go to the Kean University Library’s home page located at .

✓ Click Books, E-books, Videos, & More to access the Kean Catalog.

✓ Type your key words in the search box underneath the words Find This:

✓ Click Search.

✓ Make note of the Library Location designation for any titles of interest. You may see the following Library Location options in your search results:

➢ Main Collection -- The book is a circulating title and may be checked out. Make note of the call number and status for any Main Collection titles of interest. Books from the Main Collection are shelved by Call Number on the second and third floors of the Kean University Library.

➢ Reference Collection -- The book does not circulate and must be used in the Library. Reference books are shelved either in the Reference Collection on the first floor or in the Reference Annex on the second floor.

➢ Electronic Resource – The title is available as an e-book and may be accessed online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource. In many cases, you will need to type your Library Barcode number as a password in order to access the e-book text.

➢ U.S. Government Online Document – The document is available online by clicking the title, then clicking the hyperlink next to the words Linked Resource.

Reference Books

Listed below are select print reference titles provided for quick look-up by call number in the Reference Collection (located on the first floor of the Library) or in the Reference Collection Annex (located on the second floor of the Library). The first column displays the reference call number. The second column displays the corresponding title. Titles with the designation “Electronic Resource” may be accessed online through the Kean Catalog (see section above).

Electronic Databases

To start using the Library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the Library’s home page (). Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases. Note: When you are off-campus, you will need to log in with your Kean Google username and password after you click on a database name.

Social Work Abstracts To search Social Work Abstracts for citations/abstracts using your key terms:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Social Work Abstracts (OvidSP).

✓ Type your keywords or phrase in the Advanced Search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of your grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) or the dollar sign ($) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type:

homeless* and veteran* and (substance abus* or drug abus*)

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: Search results will appear. (If necessary, locate the Search History box toward the top of the screen, click Click to Expand to view the box’s contents, then click Display on the right-hand side of the box to view the citations retrieved for a particular search.) The first 10 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click View Abstract to access the document’s abstract (summary). Click Abstract Reference in the box on the right-hand side of the screen to view the document’s citation and abstract. Click Complete Reference to view the document’s citation, abstract, and subject headings.

✓ E-mail selected record(s) by clicking the Email option just above the search results list.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] Full Text Finder (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

EBSCOhost Research To search the EBSCOhost Research Databases for scholarly articles using your key

Databases terms:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter E on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click EBSCOhost Research Databases.

✓ Click EBSCOhost Web.

✓ Select databases pertinent to your research topic, such as Academic Search Premier, CINAHL with Full Text, ERIC, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, and SocIndex with Full Text.

✓ Click Continue.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example: social work* and substance abuse* and (adolesc* or teen*)

✓ Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals under the Limit your results heading.

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located on the right-hand side of your screen.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] Full Text Finder (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

ProQuest Research To search ProQuest Research Databases for scholarly articles from

Databases multidisciplinary journals:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter P on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click ProQuest Research Databases.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type: social work* and homeless* and child*

✓ Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly journals.

✓ Click the search button.

✓ Result: The first 20 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full text link, a Full text - PDF link, or both immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

SAGE Journals Online To search SAGE Journals Online for scholarly articles using your key terms:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click SAGE Journals Online.

✓ Type your key terms in the box next to Search All Journals.

✓ Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type:

“social work*” and homeless*

✓ Click Go.

✓ Result: The first 10 retrieved citations will be displayed. For any item that shows the message Article Available on the left-hand side of the screen, click the Full Text (PDF) link immediately below the item to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the full-text article you are viewing by clicking E-mail this article to a colleague on the right-hand side of your screen.

✓ If you do not see the Article Available message, search for the journal in the Periodicals List to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

LexisNexis Academic To search LexisNexis Academic for law reviews, case law, statutes, and regulations:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter L on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click LexisNexis Academic.

✓ Click the button labeled Search By Content Type above the search box.

✓ Select a category from the menu that appears. For instance, select Federal and State Cases; Shepard’s Citations; Landmark Cases; Federal Statutes and Regulations; State Statutes and Regulations; Law Reviews; Legal Reference, and more. For instance, click Federal and State Cases.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box.

✓ Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the “or” operator to retrieve one or more of the grouped terms (not necessarily all of the grouped terms). Use double quotes (“”) to retrieve items that contain specific phrases. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For example, type: "new jersey" and "temporary assistance" and "needy famil*”

✓ Click Search.

✓ Examine the Sources by Category list to the left of the results and click a relevant category. For instance, click NJ Superior Court Cases from 1948.

✓ Click a title to access the full-text document.

✓ E-mail the document you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail (envelope icon) located in the top right-hand corner of your screen.

Social Sciences To search Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science: ISI Web of Knowledge /

Citation Index Thomson Reuters) for scholarly article and for cited references (determining what other articles cite a previously published article):

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science: ISI Web of Knowledge / Thomson Reuters).

✓ Under the Citation Databases heading in the Current Limits area, make sure that there is a checkmark to the left of Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI)--1995-present. Remove the checkmark next to the names of the other citation indexes.

✓ Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third search boxes. At the right-hand side of each search box, select the appropriate search field, such as Topic, Author, Publication Name, Title, and so on.

✓ Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol after a word root to retrieve articles with the word root and all of its possible word endings. For instance, type:

social work* homeless* [as a Topic search]

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. Click the title to see the article’s full record, which includes the article citation and abstract (summary). If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full Text button. Click this button to view the full-text article.

✓ E-mail the article record you are viewing by clicking E-mail above the record.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

To complete an Author Finder search to locate articles by a particular author:

✓ Return to the original search form by clicking Search toward the top of the screen.

✓ Click Author Finder below the second search box.

✓ Complete the form by typing the author’s last name and first initial and completing the steps as directed.

To complete a Cited Reference Search to determine what other articles cite a previously published article (make sure you have the original article’s citation):

✓ Click Cited Reference Search toward the top of the screen.

✓ Type the author’s last name and first initial in the box labeled Cited Author.

For instance, type: Pleace N*

✓ Type the journal name in the box labeled Cited Work. Click journal abbreviation list to find the correct way to type the journal name. For instance: SOC POLICY ADMIN

✓ Click Search.

✓ Locate the entry that matches the originating article’s year of publication, volume number, and first page number, then click View Record to see the complete record.

✓ The blue Cited By box on the right-hand side of the screen shows information about articles that cite the article. Click view all __ citing articles to see a complete list of the citing articles.

✓ If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full Text button. Click this button to view the full-text article

✓ E-mail the article record you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail at the top of the record.

✓ If full-text link options are not present, click [pic] (when present) to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

Oxford Bibliographies To search Oxford Bibliographies Online for literary guides featuring “important

Online and significant sources” recommended by “leading scholars” for Social Work topics:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter O on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Oxford Bibliographies Online (Oxford University Press).

✓ Click Browse to browse a list of all entries.

✓ As an alternative, type your key terms in the Search box. For example, type: PTSD

✓ Click Search.

✓ Result: Retrieved entry titles will be displayed. Click any title to view the full-text literary guide, which will include lists of recommended books and journal articles.

✓ For recommended books: run a search for a book’s title or author in the Kean Catalog to see whether or not the Kean University Library has a copy of the book.

✓ For recommended journal articles: click the [+] next to Find this resource, then click [pic] to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases. If this link does not work, then search for the journal in the Periodicals List to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases.

Sage Knowledge To search Sage Knowledge for encyclopedia and other reference book articles using your key terms:

✓ Go to the Library’s home page ().

✓ Click Articles & More to access the Databases page.

✓ Click the letter S on the alphabetical menu.

✓ Click Sage Knowledge.

✓ Type your key terms in the search box. For example, type: social work*

✓ Click the magnifying glass icon to run the search.

✓ The results list will include links to reference books (labeled as Encyclopedia, Handbook, or Dictionary) and to articles (labeled as Encyclopedia Entry or Handbook Chapter). Click an article title to view a full-text encyclopedia entry or handbook chapter. Click a link to an encyclopedia or handbook to browse the entire e-book.

✓ E-mail an article by clicking the share icon toward the top right corner of the screen.
