Sociology Homework for First Semester – 2013
9/9: Welcome Back! Today we learned what the course entails.
First assignment: the “Three Things Essay” - For those who
have never had me before, you are to write a 5 paragraph essay on the three
things you like best about yourself. Typed, double-spaced. For those
who have had me before, the topic is the three people you’d most like to
meet. (They can be living or deceased.) This essay is due tomorrow.
9/10: We collected the above essay today. We filled out the attendance sheets.
I learned your names today. (Will I remember them tomorrow???)
There is no homework tonight.
9/11: We remember all those who lost their lives in the attacks twelve years ago,
as well as the first responders (who risked/gave their lives) and all their
loved ones.
We passed out textbooks/packets today. Anyone who received a text should
cover it and bring it back tomorrow. (The rest of the texts we have on RUSH
and we are hopeful they will soon be here. With copies of the current chapters no one will get behind.)
9/12: If you received a text, we checked the covers today.
We finished our group activity today and discussed the importance of groups.
For tomorrow, begin identifying terms that you find in Ch. 1. Put these in your
notebook for use during class discussion. I encouraged you to organize your
Ch. 1 notes in the following manner:
1. Important Terms and Concepts
2. Sociologists
3. The Theoretical Approaches
4. The Sociology of Sport
For tomorrow, try to have as many terms/concepts identified as possible in Ch. 1.
9/13: Today we discussed Current Events Presentations and asked for volunteers to go
Friday, Sept. 20. Please have your articles approved by Wed., Sept. 18.
We also began to go over our Terms/Concepts and most all seemed to have what
we defined. If possible, continue on with those terms in your notes.

9/16: We continued with terms today and almost finished them. We will begin the
Sociologists tomorrow, so be sure that you have some (or all) of them.
Current Event people, remember to get your article approved by Wednesday.
9/17: We finished terms and began Sociologists today. You will want to have most
of them tomorrow. Current Event people should have their articles ready for
approval no later than tomorrow (Wed.).
9/18: We discussed several Sociologists today and will have to continue them next
time. Remember, today is the deadline for getting your articles approved!
9/19: Today we took the Initial Assessment. We then finished our discussion of the
Sociologists. Tomorrow, we will have Current Events, so on Monday we will
begin discussion of the Theoretical Approaches. We will probably finish the
chapter on Tuesday and test on Thursday. Make sure your notes keep pace.
9/20: Current Events today! Everyone did a fantastic job. We picked volunteers for
next week. Those people need to have their articles approved by Wed., 9/25.
We will be finishing up Ch. 1 material by Tuesday, so our Chapter 1 test will
likely (we will finalize on Monday) be on Thursday, 9/26. Please plan accordingly.

9/23: We discussed the three theoretical approaches today. We will go on
to the Sociology of Sports tomorrow. Review on Wed., test on Thursday (Ch. 1).
Current Events people: please have your articles approved by Wed., 9/25.
9/24: We went over the Sociology of Sports today, in preparation for our review
tomorrow. The test is Thursday, 9/26.
Current Event volunteers should get their articles approved by tomorrow. (Wed.)
9/25: Current Event articles were due for approval today.
We had a great review for the Chapter 1 test tomorrow.

9/26: (Sorry about the crazy margins above. () Today, we took our first chapter test.
Hope it was a good experience for you. Tomorrow, we will have current events.
We will talk about the paper (previously mentioned) on approaches tomorrow.
If you have time to begin, start taking your notes from Chapter 2. We will begin
the chapter next week.
9/27: Current Events today! The articles were SO interesting! Great job.
People who are going next week, remember that your articles need to be approved
by Wed., Oct. 2.
We will discuss our Approach paper on Monday. No details today.

9/30: We began our film (Waking Ned Divine) today. You have a film sheet on which
you have written the characters names. The filmsheet is due 24 hours after we
finish the film. (Write in pen.)
Your Approach Paper is due on Thursday, Oct. 3. It should follow the 5 para-
graph format. In the lst paragraph, explain what the approaches are and why and
how they are used. In the body paragraphs, explain each of the approaches in
detail. If you use the exact definition from the book, use quotes and give credit
to the author, but go on to explain the approach in your own words. In the
concluding paragraph, explain what your favorite approach is and why.
Be sure to come and see me if you need help.
10/1: We continued our film today and will finish it tomorrow.

10/3: We began Chapter 2 today and got into groups to discuss certain well-known
“truths.” We will have Current Events tomorrow.
10/4: Current Events today! Be sure to work on your Ch. 2 notes. We collected the
Filmsheets today. Have a great weekend!
10/7: We continued more into Chapter 2 today, discussing scientific terms.
Current Event volunteers, please get your articles approved by Wed., Oct. 9.
Homework: Keep doing your notes for class.
10/8: We discussed more of Ch. 2 today.
Current Events articles are due by tomorrow for approval.
Continue notes for Ch. 2.
10/9: More of Ch. 2. We also discussed the Restaurant Survey Project. We will
decide our deadline tomorrow. Current Event articles needed to be approved
today.
10/10: We decided that Oct. 24th would be the deadline for our Restaurant Survey
Project. Start working on your survey. You may give me your draft and I
will edit it with you. Then, you will finalize your corrections and get the
corrected copy back to me to Xerox. You will want to get your surveys out
as soon as possible, so you can get them out quickly, before the kids get tired
of doing then.
We continued along in Ch. 2 after talking about the project.

10/11: Current Events today. Work on your surveys.

10/14: Today, we discussed sociological research in diverse cultural settings.
We also left time to discuss graphing the results of our surveys. Everyone
should really get their corrected surveys to me to run ASAP, if you haven’t
already.
Current Event volunteers, please get your articles approved by Wed., Oct. 16.
10/15: We discussed experiments today, specifically the Western Electric Co. – the
Hawthorne Effect, the Stanford County Prison Experiment and the Milgram
Experiment.
For Friday: Please review the SCPExp. slideshow online at , and then answer one (1) of the Discussion Questions found at the end of the slide-
show (typed and double-spaced).
Wed. is the deadline for approval of Current Events and Thursday, we will meet
in the 103 Computer Lab. Please get your surveys done and out there! Project is
due on Thursday, Oct. 24.
10/16: We discussed surveys today, specifically the Literary Digest Poll of 1936 and
the Lois Benjamin “Talented 100” survey.
Tomorrow, we meet in Room 103.
The Stanford County Prison Experiment discussion question is due on Friday, Oct. 18.
Today, Current Events for Friday were due for approval.
Restaurant Projects are due on Thursday, Oct. 24.
10/17: We were in the lab today and we all took a few Implicit Association Tests online.
We also had time to “play” with graphing in connection with our Restaurant
Survey Projects. Many of us now know how to graph our data! Hurray for us!
Tomorrow, the SCP Exp. Discussion Question is due (typed and double-spaced).

10/21: Today we discussed practicalities of the project and graphing. The Restaurant
Survey Project is due Thursday, Oct. 24.
The Sociological Perspective reading questions are due next Monday, Oct. 28th,
typed and double-spaced.
Our test for Chapter 2 will be on Wednesday, Oct. 30th.
10/22: We finished our Chapter today. The Test will be on Wed., 10/30.

10/23: PLEASE NOTE: Due to MY mistake, the test (Ch. 2) was listed as being on Wed., Oct. 30th. It is NOT on that date! It is TUESDAY, OCT. 29.
Everyone was very nice about my mistake when I pointed it out in class, and no one seemed to have an issue with the new date. Thank you!
We did an in-class activity on the Roma today. Hope you all enjoyed learning
a little more about them as a group.

10/28: We had our Chapter 2 review today. Our Test will be tomorrow. Please bring a
blue or black pen. Our next chapter will be Chapter 9 – Deviance.
10/29: We had our Chapter 2 Test today. Please begin preparing your notes for
Chapter 9 – Deviance.
10/30: Today, we began Chapter 9 by putting the names of all kinds of deviants on
the board. We discussed why each one was a deviant.
Start preparing your notes on this chapter.
10/31: We discussed deviance and why it exists. Please prepare your notes.
11/1: We went into Ch. 9 in more depth today, discussing various studies that tried
to determine possible criminality through biological or psychological means.
Continue to prepare your chapter notes.

for our guest speaker, Dr. Williams.

and possibly projects. You should be working on your notes for Ch. 9 starting
on p. 207 (Crime).

1/2: Happy New Year! We did some more projects today and in mods 13-14,
we continued on with material about crime in Ch. 9. We need to finish
all the projects and finish Ch. 9 so that we can have our Crime Test at
the end of next week. Make sure all Crime notes are finished.

1/6: We determined our test date for Crime – Friday, 10 Jan.

1/7: We discussed the reasons for punishment and the death penalty. Tomorrow,

1/8: We discussed community-based corrections today – probation, shock probation and
parole. Tomorrow we will have our review and then Friday we will have our test
on crime. Current Events are due by Wed., Jan. 15 and presentations will be on
Friday, Jan. 17.
1/9: We had our review today for our test on Crime in Ch. 9.
1/10: Test – Crime – Chapter 9. Next, we will study Ch. 13 – Gender Stratification.

1/20: No School – MLK Day.
1/21: Mods 13-14 were reviewed for their Ch. 13 Test.
Mods 11-12 did not meet, but when we do, we will review for the Ch. 6 Test.
***Once you have been reviewed, expect the test on the next available day.
(All Sociology students will be taking a Final Assessment Test – which we had
planned to take on Friday, Jan. 24. It may still be possible to do that, and you
study for that by just reviewing all of the notes for Chapters 1,2,9, & 13.
So, when we are in school next, listen for when the Final Assessment Test will
take place.)
1/22: No School – Snow Day
1/23: Today, we discussed the Final Assessment Test which will be given on Tues., Jan. 28. We will Review for these on Mon., Jan. 27.
Tomorrow is our Chapter 13 Test. (Friday, Jan. 23)
1/24: Today, was our Chapter 13 Test. Monday, we will begin our semester review.
Tuesday – we will have our Final Assessment Test for Sociology.
Wednesday – we will continue review for the Final Exam.
Thursday – exams begin.
