SOCIAL SCIENCE - Stetson University

SOCIAL SCIENCE

Diane Everett, Chair

This interdisciplinary major encourages students to examine a wide range of human social experiences through the theories and methodologies of the social sciences. These disciplines seek to understand the structure and functioning of modern society, as well as changes that have occurred through social, cultural, historical, and political processes. Courses that can be used towards the social science major are offered by the Departments of American Studies, Economics, Environmental Science and Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology and Anthropology. (With prior approval, special offerings in other departments and programs may also be included.) The major comprises 7 course units in one discipline (the primary area of concentration) and 4 course units in a second discipline (the secondary area of concentration). Additionally, students must complete all of the College of Arts and Sciences’ general education requirements, with two of these courses taken in two social sciences other than the primary and secondary areas of concentration. Because students must complete a senior project within the primary area of concentration, Social Science majors must take those courses that are prerequisites or co-requisites to the senior project course itself, with any exceptions to be determined by the chair of the department of that area.
