VISITORS AND GUESTS

Joining us for breakfast was Scott Saywell, Superintendent of School District 68.

BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES

This week, birthday wishes to Lee Rowley and Barry Sparkes.

HEALTH OF THE CLUB

On a sad note, we learned past club president, Bob Lloyd passed away.

CLUB PRESIDENT

BARRY SPARKES

Barry had a big thank-you to Mark for filling in on presidential duties and also extended congratulations to Jodie for her tremendous work with the Terry Fox run. Barry read two thank-you notes from our VIU student award recipients.

Barry knew…on this day in 1876 the Bissell carpet sweeper was patented; in 1947 Jackie Robinson received the inaugural major league baseball Rookie of the year award; in 1893 New Zealand was the 1st self-governing country in the world to enfranchise women voters.

FOUNDATION

$ 90 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Barry Sparkes had the lucky ticket drawn for $ 16.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – RALPH LEMMON

Happy $ from Ralph – it was a privilege to help at the Terry Fox run. A compassion & TY $ from Jodie to James for his patience & support. In Nanaimo the run raised an amazing $ 27,359. Dave Elgie reminded us, he is looking for volunteers for the 7-10 breakfast. Steve C., Big Brothers Big Sisters, tells us the new colours are teal and black and they have a new logo The kick-off event was a big success. A reminder $, this month, wife Shawna is taking Veasey product orders. This is a fundraising activity for her ‘Transformations Learning Society’. Rachel jokingly talked about her ‘baby’ brain. Happy $ from Michael, perhaps good for his employment future, that Scott Saywell is with us today. Ralph congratulated Troy for his perfect ‘introductions’. Happy $ from Neil, it is good to be home. James did not draw a joker. Next week’s pot will be $ 390.

THE NANAIMO GYMNSTRAEDA TEAM

‘SUCCESS FOR ALL’

Appointed to the position in 2018, Nanaimo and Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) Superintendent Scott Saywell’s presentation was informative and interesting. He began with a photo of a kindergarten student expected to graduate in 2033. This photo underlined the changing face of education and the need to look forward at new ways of learning. Technology has changed everyone and so too it has and continues to change the field of education. Ongoing are changes in curriculum, instruction, assessment and reporting. Teaching competencies are considered more important than memorizing curriculum. Reporting student progress has moved away from letter grades to provide a less biased, more complete picture of progress. SD 68’s today goals are to empower all students to become healthy, confident life-long learners and socially conscious citizens. Powerful learning happens in a safe environment, with personal investment, real world experiences and with learners having fun. A quote from a well-regarded ‘expert’, we need to teach according to how we learn. The quality of a school as a learning community can be measured by how effectively it addresses the needs of struggling students.

Within SD 68, there are 27 elementary and 7 secondary schools. The student population is 14,000 and there are 2,000 employees.

For the year ended June 30th, 2019 revenues were

$ 159 million of which $ 142 million came from the Minister of Education. At $ 126 million instruction expenses were 80% of the budget.

Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” …Nelson Mandella

‘IT’s THE BEST JOB GOING’

Scott Saywell was born in Duncan, grew up and graduated from High School in Nanaimo. He earned a biological degree and then an education degree in the Maritimes. He spent many of his work years, prior to his SD 68 appointment as a teacher in alternative learning programmes. He views Nanaimo as a great place to live and work.

One gets insight into Scott’s education world by visiting the SD 68 website, listening to his January 2019 education talk video. Talking to Scott, you know he lives his ‘dream’job.

ROTARY FOUNDATION

Rotary is dedicated to six areas of focus to build international relationships, improve lives, and create a better world to support our peace efforts and end polio forever.

• Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

• Disease prevention and treatment

• Water, sanitation, and hygiene

• Maternal and child health

• Basic education and literacy

• Community economic development

For each area of focus the Rotary Foundation has a policy statement. The policy statements list eligible and ineligible activities, including examples of the types of projects Rotary clubs and districts have successfully implemented.

ROTARY MINUTE – LEE ROWLEY

[pic]

Lee presented us with information about the history of Rotary in Ireland. Founded in 1911, the Rotary Club of Dublin was the first Rotary Club outside of North America. The idea of Rotary was brought to Ireland by William Morrow, who had returned from the United States. On his first tour of Britain and Ireland, Paul Harris visited the Dublin Club.

Partly because of internal conflicts and tensions, partly because of religious influences, partly because of geography, Rotary growth in Ireland happened at a very slow pace. What is remarkable and unique today is that Ireland remains as a single district. Ireland District 1160 is one of 26 districts operating under the nomenclature of Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland. The District has 2,700 members in seventy-four clubs.

After the outbreak of trouble in 1969, Rotarians from all over Ireland and Britain donated funds to worthy causes within Northern Ireland and continue to work together to promote World Peace and Understanding.
