The Determination of the Water of Crystallization
The Determination of the Water of Crystallization
Pre-lab assignment
1. Sodium carbonate exists as a decahydrate.
Write the chemical formula of this compound (the hydrate).
2. Write a balanced chemical equation describing what happens when the hydrate is heated and the water of hydration is driven off. The ionic product is called an anhydrous salt.
3. Calculate the formula masses of the hydrate and the anhydrous salt.
4. Calculate the mass of water that would be lost if 45.67 g of sodium carbonate decahydrate was heated to drive off the water of hydration.
Use the information in #3 above; you may set up a ratio or use factor label; show your set up.
5. Describe the process of “heating to constant mass”.
