Ready for Launch

Solar System Model Assignment

You are a famous astronomer, and many people want to hear what you know about the solar system. In order to present this information to them, you need to create a model of the solar system. This model needs to be a three-dimensional wonder that will interest your audience, and it needs to be a unique creation of your own, not a kit or pre-made model. Your model should clearly and accurately demonstrate the sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. The order of the planets must accurately represent our solar system, and everything must be correctly labeled and colored, including rings for the planets that have them.

Once you have prepared your model, you need to prepare for your presentation. Your audience will be thrilled to hear an astronomer as famous as you, so you should plan out what you will say in advance. In your presentation, you should explain your model of the solar system and how you created it, which should take less than five minutes. This presentation should not be facts and should not include information printed off the Internet or from a book. Bring a typed copy of your presentation speech to turn in when you present. The typed presentation speech should be one page or less. (Students who need to type the presentation at school need to arrange that with their teacher in advance.)

You need to be ready for your presentation on Monday, March 7. Don’t forget to bring your model and typed presentation in on this day! You will also need to turn in this rubric with your name on it.

Solar System Project Checklist (Have all these items ready to go on Monday, March 7):

← Completed model of the solar system

← Typed presentation speech explaining your model and how you created it (one page or less)

← Presentation practiced

← Solar System Model Rubric (this paper) with your name on it
