Solar System Catalog

(modified from Journey Through the Universe – Our Solar System)

Purpose

Students will create a catalog for the components in the Solar System.

Introduction

A catalog allows you to learn many things about the inventory of a store. For example, you can learn whatkinds of items are available and at what price. Here’s a novel idea: imagine you manage a store called theSolar System. Your job is to create a catalog of *the Solar System so we can determine what kinds of objectsare contained within it.

Materials

← Pencils

← Catalog template

← Colored pencils, crayons or markers

Procedure

1. You will need to research the different components of the Solar System, including:

← The Sun

← Planets

← Comets

← Asteroids

← Dwarf Planets

← Meteoroids, Meteors, Meteorites

2. Complete each section on the Solar System Catalog template, including a picture.

3. Assign a price value to each SolarSystem component. Justify the price of each component. For example, is the price based on size, importance, or abundance?
