Primary Program 2008: “I Am a Child of God”

Prelude Music: Primary children begin playing songs on the piano ten minutes before sacrament begins. They take turns playing the prelude music as the congregation enters the chapel.

Sacrament Meeting Opening Song: “I Know my Father Lives” p. 302 -Primary and Congregation

1.  Who am I? That is one of life’s greatest questions. I know who I am. I am a child of God.

2. When we come to truly understand the words "I am a child of God," our testimonies grow.

3. In Psalms 82:6 it is written, "All of you are children of the most High."

4. “I am (their first name). I am a (dancer, football player, etc).

5. “I am (their first name). I am a (dancer, football player, etc). But most importantly…”

6. In the Proclamation to the Family we read: "All human beings - male and female- are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny."

7. I am created in Heavenly Fathers image.

8. Each person who is living or who has ever lived on the earth, is a child of God

9. Before we came to earth, we lived with our Father in Heaven

10. In heaven we learned what we needed to do to return to live with him one day.

Hello. We are Missionaries sent from Heavenly Father to help you understand what your Earth life will be like.

11. Child #1 “in Heaven”: “I cannot wait until it is my turn to go to earth. I wonder what it will be like.”

There are many beautiful places on earth. Heavenly Father and Jesus have created an earth with land, water, trees, animals, and vegetation for us to enjoy.

12. Child #2“in Heaven”: “I am so glad Heavenly Father has provided a plan in which I can go to earth to receive a mortal body and be tested.”

13. “Satan told us he wanted to force everyone to do right, which meant we wouldn’t think or act for ourselves.

14. I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor.” (Moses 4:1)

15. “Jesus said he would come to He wanted us to have freedom to think and choose for ourselves.

16. He said, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.” (Moses 4:2)

17. “In our premortal life, Heavenly Father let us choose for ourselves which plan we wanted to follow.

18. Everyone who came to earth wanted to follow Jesus’ plan.”

19. Child #3 “in Heaven”: “Once we get to earth, how will we know about Jesus so that we can follow His example?”

Teacher “in Heaven”: “You can learn about Jesus and Heavenly Father from the scriptures.

20. I can learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus in the Bible and Book of Mormon

21. The Scriptures teach me what to do to return to live with Heavenly Father.

22. Through reading the scriptures I can gain a testimony of Jesus Christ. He loves me.

23. Because of His Atonement I can repent and live with Heavenly Father again.

24. Jesus Christ Lives today. He will come again.

25. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world (1 John 4:14).

26. Child #4 in Heaven: “I will definitely read and learn from the scriptures so that I will know about Jesus and how I can be more like Him.”

This year in primary we have learned how we can be more like Jesus. Here are some of the ways our class is trying to be like Jesus.

Sunbeams each tell one way they are trying to be like Jesus.

27. “I am trying to be like Jesus by…”

41. Child #5 in Heaven: “Who can help me to make the right decisions while I am on earth?”

Teacher: “Heavenly Father has called and ordained living prophets to give us guidance and direction.”

42. Child #6 in Heaven: “So the prophet’s voice is like the voice of the Lord’s?”

Teacher “in Heaven”: “Exactly. And each prophet has given specific counsel and commandments that will help to guide you throughout your life. This counsel will not only help you to return to live with our Heavenly Father again, but it will also help you to choose the right and be happy.”

Children hold up a picture of a prophet and tell something that that prophet taught.

43. “President Joseph Smith said, ‘I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book”’ (Book of Mormon introduction; see also History of the Church, 4:461).

44. President Harold B. Lee declared: “Happiness comes from unselfish service. And happy homes are only those where there is a daily striving to make sacrifices for each other’s happiness” (“Chapter 14: Love at Home,” Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Harold B. Lee, 129).

45. “President Gordon B. Hinckley said, ‘Try a little harder to be a little better’" (Ensign, May 1995, 88).

46. “President Thomas S. Monson has counseled us to study diligently, pray earnestly, and serve willingly” (Thomas S. Monson, “Three Goals to Guide You,” Liahona, Nov 2007, 118–21.)

47. Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets (Amos 3:7).

[pic]Song: “We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet.” [pic]

Primary children stand and children hold up the pictures of the prophets in order.

48. Child #7 in Heaven: “Is the Prophet the only one who teaches me about my Heavenly Father.

Teacher “in Heaven”: “Heavenly Father has planned for you to go to a family

49.  The family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children ("The Family: A Proclamation to the World").

50. God gave me a family to love me and teach me.

51. The family is an important part of God’s plan.

52. Each member of my family has a divine role.”

53. A few things that can strengthen our family are Family prayer

54. The Priesthood

55. Family Home Evening

56. Scripture study

57. And spending time at home with my family.”

[pic]Song: “Home” (we are using a guitar as the accompaniment) [pic]

58. Child #8: What will happen to my family when our Earth Life is finished?

Teacher: “Heavenly Father has told the world in the Proclamation for the Family that when sealed in a temple of the Lord, a family unit has the potential to be eternal—to endure beyond mortal life. Temple ordinances make it possible for children to be sealed to their parents forever.”

59. I will live now to be worthy to go to the temple by learning to be reverent, I will dress modestly speak kindly to others.

60. Let this house be built unto my name, that I may reveal mine ordinances therein unto my people (D&C 124:40).

[pic]Song: “I Love to See the Temple”. [pic] Primary children will hold up pictures of temples from around the world.

Teacher in Heaven: “There is something I must tell you. Although everyone who goes down to earth is a child of God, not everyone will know about the Gospel.” But there is a missionary program. Last year alone there were 53,143 missionaries. They served in 157 nations and territories and taught the Gospel in 164 different languages around the world.” Bishop are you really reading this?

61. But every member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, no matter his or her age, can be a missionary now.”

62. “I can be a missionary now by praying and reading the scriptures daily. By being faithful and obedient. And by Living my Gospel Standards.”

63. “We can all be missionaries now. And if it so be that you should . . . bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy (D&C 18:15).

64. I can pray to Heavenly Father to find out if the things that I read in the scriptures and learn at Church are true.

65. My Heavenly Father is never far away. I can pray to Him and He listens.

66. Heavenly Father knows me. He will answer my prayers in ways that are best for me. Answers to my prayers come from Heavenly Father through the Holy Ghost, the scriptures and others.

67. When you have received a confirmation that this church is true you can be baptized. And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands (D&C 68:27). “I am glad I could be baptized just like Jesus.”

[pic] Song: “When Jesus Christ was Baptized” with sign language. [pic]

68. Child #12 “in Heaven”: “This all sounds so great. I can’t wait to go to earth, read the scriptures, learn about Jesus, follow the prophets, have a family, attend the temple, be a missionary, and get baptized.

We need to always remember, and this is the most important thing for us to know and remember while we are on earth. We are children of God. He loves me and I know he loves you too. In fact, every child in every country is a child of God.

Teacher: “Everyone, everywhere can say:”

All of the children say in unison “I Am a Child of God.”

Bishop:  Closing remarks. At the conclusion of the Bishop’s remarks, the bishopric sings, “I Am a Child of God”.  Singing one line then the children then stand up randomly (when they see their teachers standing) and begin singing with him.  That is the cue for the audience to do the same.  It is always good to assign a few members the task of standing to help the congregation understand what is happening.
