Song Lyrics Analysis Project

Most literary & poetic devices can be found in all types of texts, not just stories or poems. Since most of us love to listen to music, to help us understand common literary devices and how they work, we will complete a project to focus on themes and devices within songs.

Steps to the Project:

1. Select a *class appropriate* song of any style with lyrics that have a minimum of 5 literary devices. Although you may duplicate the TYPE of literary device, you MAY NOT duplicate phrases or lines in your song for your examples as part of your analysis.

2. Print/Show the lyrics and have them approved by Mr. Zimmerman.

3. Analyze your poem/lyrics. What is it about? What message(s) is it sending? What theme is being discussed? Also, find at least 5 literary devices and explain their purpose and effect. Why did the song writer include these devices? What does it do to the sound, meaning, or emotional effect? Use the attached brainstorming sheet for guidance.

4. Create a PowerPoint, Prezi, Video, etc. This will be your visual aide for the class which displays your findings. We will be working in class for a few days; the rest is up to you. Include the following information:

1. Title of Song/ Artist/ Album Song was Released on/ Recording Company/ Year

Published

2. Biography of Artist(s). Be sure to add a citation(s) on this slide stating where you found your information.

3. Music Video - Be sure you choose an APPROPRIATE version as you will play parts of this.

4. What the song is about (from beginning to end of song)

5. Relevant messages/themes - include explanation

6. Audience this song is intended for - include explanation

7. Minimum 5 literary devices you’re focusing on. Include the phrase in quotes, then its purpose and effect. I recommend you make a separate slide for each literary device. No more than two of the same type.

8. Works Cited- List the song’s source as well as any websites/sources you found other information from. Don’t exclude ANY! Use correct APA format.

5. Prepare a CREATIVE presentation of approximately 3-5 minutes to share your information. You should play a short section of your song, the entire video is not necessary. Using your visual aide, explain what the song is about, its themes, and each literary device. Rehearse and be prepared for your presentation; it is part of your grade. Good Luck!
